BC Drops ACC Opener to Cal
September 07, 2025 | Men's Soccer
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team opened its ACC slate on Sunday afternoon against the Cal Golden Bears, but were unable to overcome two first half goals by the visitors and fell by a score of 2-0. Andrej Borak made three saves for the Eagles.
BC falls to 2-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the ACC, while Cal moves to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.
The Golden Bears scored twice early to take a 2-0 lead. Malcolm Zalayet scored a header off a corner kick in the 17th minute before Luka Lukic scored from close range in the 23rd minute after a loose ball was bouncing around just outside the six-yard box.
The Eagles started the game with the ball and moved it quickly down the field with Johannes Hanken Tjostheim getting an early shot on frame that was saved by Cal goalkeeper Connor Lambe.
BC's best chances of the night came in the second half. In the 72nd minute, Russell Brown struck a side volley outside the box from distance, but his effort steered right and hit off the post to go out for a goal kick. Moritz Gundelach had a headed effort in the 79th minute that went just a bit too high and hit the crossbar.
Cal held the edge in corners (10-6) and shots on goal (5-1). Five of BC's six corner kicks came in the second half.
Boston College ends its three-game home stand on Wednesday against Dean College before traveling to Virginia Tech on Sunday for an ACC battle. Both games will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
