Ace reliever Joey Ryan has second-most saves in ACC and a spot in BC history
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Boston College right-handed pitcher Joey Ryan has been named to the Midseason Watch List for the 20th annual NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced on Wednesday.
After missing the 2024 season to injury, Joey Ryan has been a revelation out of the bullpen for the Eagles in 2025. Of pitchers with at least 20 innings recorded, Ryan leads the staff in ERA (2.93), WHIP (1.05), strikeouts (32), and batting average against (.231). Through 12 appearances, Ryan has six saves to his credit, including a three-inning, five-strikeout save vs. No. 17 North Carolina (3/22), and a 1.2 inning save to secure a road series win at Wake Forest (4/19). The graduate student out of Norwood, Massachusetts is tied for second in the ACC in saves, and is among the top-50 nationally in the category.
Joey Ryan's impressive 2025 campaign also includes two winning efforts out of the bullpen. Ryan entered a 6-3 game at No. 9 Virginia and struck out four batters over four shutout innings to earn the win in the rubber match, clinching a top-10 road conference series win for the Eagles. Ryan did the same against Notre Dame, entering a tie game in the eighth and striking out two over two shutout innings to close the door.
Ryan's six saves to this point are tied for the sixth-most in a single season in Boston College history. His eleven career saves are good for fifth-most in program history, with time to build on it.
The NCBWA will announce the finalists on Wednesday, June 4, with the winner being named on Friday, June 13 at the 2025 College World Series.
