Back and Forth Battle Goes to Wake Forest in Series Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Boston College Baseball (17-20, 7-12 ACC) fell 5-4 to Wake Forest (26-13, 10-9 ACC) in the series opener at David F. Couch Ballpark on Thursday night.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Eagles opened the scoring in the second. Kyle Wolff singled, and after advancing on a sacrifice bunt, Gunnar Johnson made it 1-0 on an RBI double to the left-center gap. The hosts responded, bringing four across in their half to make it 4-1 after two full.

Jack Toomey cut into the deficit in the third, driving his fourth homer of the season to right-center, a two-run shot to make it a 4-3 game. In the ensuing frame, Toomey made a great catch at the right-field wall to finish off a scoreless third for A.J. Colarusso. Colarusso came back out and hung consecutive zeroes in the fourth and fifth to keep it a one-run game after five full. Eric Schroeder took over in the sixth and continued the trend, completing the fourth straight scoreless frame for the Eagles' defense.

Set up by the pitching, the Eagles' offense tied the game in the seventh. Gunnar Johnson singled, and pinch runner Nathanael Frederking reached second on a sacrifice bunt. One batter later, and Adam Magpoc lined a one-run single up the middle to even the score at 4-4. Joey Ryan relieved Schroeder with one down in the seventh and picked him up, setting down the next two batters to send the game to the eighth even at 4-4.

Wake Forest took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run to left field, and held the lead in the final frame to take game one.

Game two is scheduled for Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
