Eagles and Cavaliers will play in rubber match at noon on Sunday
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Boston College Baseball (5-6, 1-1 ACC) fell 22-13 to the No. 9 Virginia Cavaliers (9-4, 1-1 ACC) to even the series at 1-1 on Saturday night.
Josiah Ragsdale led off the game with a single, and Kyle Wolff reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Jack Toomey, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI in game one, stayed hot with an RBI single up the middle to open the scoring. After Patrick Roche reached on a fielder's choice, he came around to score on an E2. Adam Magpoc kept it moving, dropping an RBI single into center field to give BC a 3-0 lead after the opening frame.
Virginia responded with two in their half, making it a 3-2 game after the first inning. Tyler Mudd responded on the mound in the second, striking out the leadoff batter then closing the frame with back-to-back punchouts, maintaining the BC lead through two.
The Cavaliers tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the third, and with multiple base-runners and no outs, Vince Cimini and Sam McNulty spun a 4-6-3 double play to help the Eagles limit any further damage. Cimini led off the fourth with a double down the right-field line, and Beck Milner put BC back in front with an RBI single by the first baseman. Ragsdale's bat stayed hot, as he roped a triple into left field to make it 5-3. Kyle Wolff legged out an infield single to add another, and a three-spot in the fourth gave the Eagles a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the back-and-forth continued, with the Cavaliers striking for five to retake the lead at 8-6. The Eagles threatened with the bases loaded in the sixth, but an inning-ending double play kept it an 8-6 game. JD Ogden came in to pitch the fifth, and quieted the Cavaliers through two innings, setting down six in a row to keep it a two-run game after six frames.
BC rallied for three in the seventh, but the Cavaliers answered with nine in the bottom of the frame to take a 17-9 lead after seven. BC put four on the board in the eighth, making it a 17-13 game. Virginia brought five across in their half of the eighth, making it 22-13. BC plated three in the top of the ninth before Virginia closed it out. Eric Schroeder took the loss for the Eagles (0-2).Â
