Joey Ryan struck out four over four scoreless innings to earn the win
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Boston College Baseball (6-6, 2-1 ACC) upset to the No. 9 Virginia Cavaliers (9-5, 1-2 ACC) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon, taking the rubber match 6-3 to seal the top-ten series win.
Esteban Garcia, making his first collegiate start, opened the scoring in the second inning, roping an RBI single to left-center to bring home Adam Magpoc, who reached on a single. The Cavaliers answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame to draw even at 1-1 after two.
After Kyle Wolff and Patrick Roche reached, Jack Toomey put the Eagles back in front, smoking his second home run of the season to left field, a two-out, three-run shot to put BC up 4-1.
Brady Miller relived Bobby Chicoine after two frames, and set Virginia down in order, keeping BC in front 4-1 after three full. Sam McNulty extended the lead to 6-1, forcing an E5 on a hard ground ball to score two. Virginia answered with two of their own, but Dylan Howanitz entered at pitcher and stopped the rally there, with BC leading 6-3 after four full.
Joey Ryan came in to pitch and face the top of the order in the fifth. He did his job, working a scoreless inning, coming up with a big strikeout to strand a runner at third. Ryan continued to control the game, striking out four over four shutout innings, capping off his best performance of the year and giving way to A.J. Colarusso, who forced a 5-4-3 double play and a pop out to earn the save (1) and seal the top-ten series win. Ryan earned the win (1-0).
The Eagles will return home for their home opener on Tuesday against Merrimack, before hitting the road for another ACC series at Florida State next weekend.Â
