Cesar Gonzalez and Tyler Mudd shine on the mound in Eagles' win
RICHMOND, Va. — Boston College Baseball (4-4) took down VCU (2-9) on Sunday afternoon, winning 4-3 in the third and final game of the Central Virginia Challenge.
The Eagles struck first in the opening frame, with Nick Wang giving BC a 2-0 lead with a two-run single to right-center. VCU responded with one in their half of the first, but BC starter Tyler Mudd settled in after that, finishing his outing after 5.1 innings, with two strikeouts, just two hits allowed, and no earned runs.Â
BC pushed their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth, with Josiah Ragsdale smoking an RBI double to left-center, bringing home Jace Roossien. Roossien, making his first collegiate start, logged singles in his first two at-bats of the day.
Mudd continued to roll, putting up four straight zeroes to keep the Eagles in control. Karl Meyer came on in relief in the 6th, and caught the runner off the bag at second base to force an inning-ending rundown, with BC taking a 3-1 lead into the seventh. The Rams rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Cesar Gonzalez relieved Meyer on the mound, and picked up a huge two-out strikeout to strand the go-ahead run at second base.
The Eagles responded in the eighth, with Adam Magpoc and Vince Cimini logging back-to-back singles. Jack Toomey put the Eagles back in front on a double-play ball, putting BC up 4-3. Cesar Gonzalez came back out for the eighth and delivered, setting down the side in order to preserve the BC lead heading into the ninth. Gonzalez finished the job in the final frame, closing the door on VCU and earning his second win of the season in the process (2-0).
BC will now prepare for a pair of mid-week contests at Longwood and Richmond before their conference opener this Friday at Virginia.
