Kyle Wolff Blasts Two Homers in Comeback Victory on Sunday
February 16, 2025 | Baseball
Joey Ryan punched out three in a two-inning save in his first action in over a year
The Eagles offense got started on the first pitch of the game, with Patrick Roche driving a leadoff double off the right-center wall. Three batters later, and Nick Wang brought Roche home on a single up the middle to put BC up 1-0 after one. A.J. Colarusso started the game for BC and stranded the leadoff runner at third in the bottom of the first. The Eagles' bats kept going, with a Jack Toomey single leading to an RBI double from Sam McNulty, his second two-bagger in as many games to push the BC lead to 2-0. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Vince Cimini came up big with a single to score Nick Wang following his two-out double.
The Spartans responded with one in their half of the third, before a loud fourth inning from the Eagles. Jack Toomey and Beck Milner reached, and Patrick Roche smoked a broken-bat single up the middle to score both. One batter later, and Kyle Wolff cleared the bases with a two-run shot, his first homer of the year to push the BC lead to 7-2.
Peter Schaefer relieved Colarusso on the bump in the third, and in his first game action since 2021, Schaefer retired all four batters he faced with a strikeout to hold the Eagles' lead into the fifth. True freshman Cesar Gonzalez took over for Schaefer in the fifth and delivered a scoreless frame in his first collegiate action.
In the top of the sixth, Patrick Roche walked, and quickly advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt. Leading off second, Roche forced another errant pickoff, this time coming around to score from second to push the lead to 8-2.
The Spartans struck for three in the bottom of the sixth via a three-run home run, with BC taking a 8-5 lead into the 7th inning. USC Upstate tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh with another three-run home run, and added one more to take a 9-8 lead into the eighth inning.
In the top of the eighth, Kyle Wolff struck again, launching his second two-run home run of the day to dead center, putting the Eagles back in front, 10-9. With a one-run lead to start the ninth, Nick Wang blasted a solo shot to left field to push the Eagles' lead to 11-9.
Joey Ryan entered to pitch the eighth, and after missing 2024 to injury, retired the side in order in his first inning back. Ryan went back out for the 9th and continued to cruise, setting down the side in order to secure the win and his first save of the season, punching out three of the six batters he faced.
Matthew Spada earned the victory for BC (1-0), with Braden Conasul taking the loss (0-1). The Eagles will return home before another road trip next weekend, for a three-game set at the University of New Orleans.
