BC Tripped By UMass at Basketball Hall of Fame Classic

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Boston College fell, 76-74, to UMass at the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at Mass Mutual Center Wednesday evening. BC moves to 5-6 on the season. Donald Hand Jr. led all scorers with 18 points and was one of four BC players to reach double figures.
FIRST HALF
- Fred Payne scored the game's opening bucket with a buzzer-beater three
- UMass answered with a three of their own, holding the Eagles to two more shots through the 12-minute media
- Aidan Shaw laid down a thunderous alley-oop slam from Payne to make it 14-16 at 8:15
- The Minutemen extended their advantage to seven before a Chase Forte driving layup and Payne three-pointer cut the deficit to two
- UMass regained a 33-25 lead with 2:41 remaining. BC responded with an 8-0 run to level the score at 33-33, capped by three free throws from Payne and a Donald Hand Jr. and-one
- UMass took a 35-33 lead going into halftime
SECOND HALF
- Aidan Shaw opened with a baseline drive slam to make it 35-35
- UMass found its largest lead at the 11:53 minute mark, earning a 14-point edge
- The Eagles responded with a 13-2 run in 1:49 to cut the deficit to 56-53. Donald Hand Jr. used two and one driving layups in the stretch
- After Boden Kapke drained his and one free throw, Chase Forte gave BC its first lead since 8-7 in the first half. The Eagles would extend their lead to 63-56 with 6:05 remaining
- UMass went scoreless for nearly five minutes, breaking their scoring drought with a three-pointer at 5:35. They then reclaimed the lead with a trio of jumpers and a three-pointer, making it 69-68
- Trailing 74-72 with just over a minute remaining, Hand Jr. used a contested driving layup to even the score
- UMass would go to the charity stripe with 5.2 remaining, making both shots to reclaim the lead. They would hold on for a 76-74 decision
NOTABLES
- Four Eagles finished in double figures: Hand Jr. (18), Kapke (12), Forte (12), and Payne (11)
- Chase Forte notched a season-high five steals and added five assists
- Jason Asemota matched a season high in points (9) and rebounds (7)
- Tonight marked the 48th meeting between BC and UMass
- The Eagles fell to 34-27 all-time vs. current MAC teams

- Boston College returns to the Edgerley Family Court at Conte Forum to host Fairleigh Dickinson on December 22.

- Monday's contest marks the third all-time meeting between BC and FDU, and the third NEC team the Eagles will face this season
