Eagles Come Up Short in Loss at Georgia Tech

Chad Venning led BC with 19 points and eight rebounds in the loss
ATLANTA — Chad Venning scored 19 points and Elijah Strong added 16 but it was not enough as Boston College dropped an 85-64 decision at Georgia Tech on Saturday.
Venning connected on 8-of-15 field goals, while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds in 30 minutes.
There were five lead changes and four ties early on, as both teams traded baskets to start the game. Â Two free throws by Strong gave BC a 15-14 lead with 12:58 left in the period. Â But Georgia Tech would respond, taking the lead for good after seven unanswered points made it 21-15 with 11:26 to play. Â
A 3-pointer from Roger McFarlane made it a three-point game - 23-20 - with 10:08 left in the period but Georgia Tech would use a 17-4 extended run to put the game out of reach with 3:53 remaining in the period.
The Eagles trailed 44-31 at the break and got no closer than 10 points early in the second half.
BC yielded nearly 60% shooting from the floor to the Yellow Jackets, including 8-of-17 shooting from beyond the arc for the game.

- Both teams found their offensive groove early, as BC made 5-of-8 and GT connected on 4-of-6 to start the game. Â It was 11-9 in favor of the Eagles at the first media break.
- After two Elijah Strong FT made it 15-14 with 12:58 left in the half, the Yellow Jackets scored seven straight over the next minute and a half to take a 21-15 lead
- A Roger McFarlane 3-pointer with 10:08 to go made it a three-point game - 23-20 - before a 17-4 push by Georgia Tech over the six-plus minutes opened it up. Â
- The Jackets led 40-24 at the four minute media break, connecting on 64.0% from the floor - including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc - up to that point
- BC would trail, 44-31, at the break
- Georgia Tech made five of its first six field goals to start the half, taking its largest lead of the game - 18 points - at 56-38
- The Eagles could not get into a rhythm offensively, connecting on only 5-of-17 through the first 11 minutes of play
- Venning scored 15 of his team-high 19 in the second half
- Venning's 19 points and eight rebounds were a season-high. Â The grad transfer was 8-of-15 from the floor on the afternoon
- Elijah Strong added 16 points and six boards, but committed four turnovers
- Luka Toews dished out four assists in 12 minutes of action. Â Over his last two games, the freshman has seven assists and one turnover in 28 total minutes
- BC's bench was outscored, 33-16, on the day and the Eagles gave up 18 points off their 13 turnovers
- For the second time in four ACC games, an Eagles' opponent held a double-digit advantage in free throw attempts (+12)
- Boston College returns to action next Saturday, hosting Syracuse at Conte Forum on Jan. 11.
- Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. and the game will air live on The CW.
