BC Comes Up Short After Second Half Run by Syracuse

Three Eagles score in double figures in the first meeting of the season between the two teams
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Donald Hand Jr. led three Boston College players in double figures with 20 points but it was not enough as Syracuse used a late second half surge to get by the Eagles, 79-71, on Saturday at Conte Forum.
Hand also added a team-high nine rebounds in 33 minutes of play. Â Joshua Beadle and Chad Venning each added 17 points in the loss.
A tightly contested first half saw a tie score at the break - 32-32 - as Beadle's 3-pointer beat the buzzer for BC.
The Eagles build as much as an eight-point lead in the second half - 54-46 - with 8:51 to play but ended on the short end of a 24-7 run that flipped the script on the scoreboard.

FIRST HALF
- A back-and-forth affair, there was not a stoppage of play until the 12:30 mark of the opening half of play
- Syracuse started hit, making 6-of-10 field goals and taking a 12-6 lead with 14:15 left
- The Eagles scored the next seven - five from Donald Hand Jr. - to take a 13-12 lead
- But the Orange responded with nine straight points of their own, leading 21-13 with 8:51 to play
- The first called foul came at the 8:51 mark - as Hand was hacked on a drive to the basket
- Both teams cooled off, combining to miss 12 straight shots, before a Roger McFarlane 3-pointer cut it to 21-18 with 7:12 left
- BC got within one - 21-20 - before six straight from the Orange made it 27-20 with 3:28 to play in the period.
- Another 7-0 run, this time for BC, tied it with 1:25 to play and the two teams traded baskets for the rest of the way.
- After three free throws by Syracuse gave it a 32-29 lead with seven ticks left, Joshua Beadle continued his late clock heroics from deep
- Beadle drilled a trifecta as time expired and the halftime score was knotted at 32-32.
- The first half took less than 50 minutes, as neither team reached the bonus.
- BC began the second half with a traditional three-point play from Venning on the opening possession
- A fast break set up by a steal from Dion Brown, an outlet from Venning, and a layup from Beadle gave BC its largest lead of the game - 41-36 - with 16:15 remaining.
- The trading of baskets continued between the two teams over the next four-plus minutes, with Hand converted an and-one with a little under 12 minutes to play, giving BC a 49-44 edge.
- Boston College would take its largest lead of the game after a made free throw by Chas Kelley III - 54-48 - with 8:33 to play.
- From there, a 10-0 Syracuse run over the next 3:11 gave the Orange their first lead of the half - 56-54 - with 5:17 left.
- The Orange continued to build on their lead, extending the run to 24-7 over a span of 7:28, taking a 70-61 advantage with 1:23 to play.Â
- Donald Hand Jr. was 9-for-9 from the free throw line - his ninth game with a perfect mark from the foul line.
- Joshua Beadle's 17-point performance was his fourth game in double figures this season
- Jayden Hastings registered two blocked shots. Â It was his 10th game with at least one block and his seventh multi-block game of the season
- 38 of BC's 71 points came in the painted area
- Boston College heads to Notre Dame on Monday for an ACC matchup, beginning at 7 p.m.
