Eagles Top Blue Devils, Fall to Bearcats in Five Sets

The Eagles topped CCSU in three sets, before falling to Binghamton
FAIRFIELD, Conn.-- The Boston College volleyball team wrapped the Fairfield Invitational going 2-1. The Eagles topped both Fairfield (3-0) on Friday and CCSU (3-0) on Saturday before falling to Binghamton (2-3) on Saturday night. The Eagles close out the weekend with a 5-1 record.
Halle Schroder and Audrey Ross shared the spotlight Saturday posting 25 and 21 kills respectively over the two matches against CCSU and Binghamton. Classmate Brooklyn Yelland led the defensive effort adding 40 digs over the two games. Cornelia Roach and Julia Haggerty contributed nine blocks each against Saturday's competitors.Â
Freshman Aubrey Moore guided the offensive effort adding 30 assists, while Sophia Lambros followed with 24. Lambros added one service ace on the day, notching her 131st career ace, an all-time career program record.Â
The Eagles finished the tournament in second, Halle Schroder and Julia Haggerty took home all-tournament honors.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Vs. Central Connecticut State
Set 1- The Eagles opened the match to a 6-3 run before suffering a series of Blue Devil points, coming from three kills and two aces from CCSU. As the Blue Devils gained the lead, their play slowed and earned five points for the Eagles to get back on top. BC claimed the lead, and closed out the match on a Roach kill to take set one, 25-21.
Set 2- The Eagles stormed out to a 7-1 opening lead. BC continued its momentum on a 4-0 run causing a CCSU timeout on a Ross Ace. The Blue Devils never came closer than nine points in the second set, closing on the Eagles sixth ace of the set.

Set 3- The teams found themselves at a 10-10 tie before the Eagles went on a 12-3 point run to solidify their lead for the remainder of the match. A service from Bernal earned the match point for BC, 25-14.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Vs. Binghamton
Set 1-Binghamton took the early lead, 5-2, as the teams traded points before a three-point BC run to take the lead. The Bearcats rallied to tie the match at 20, BU tied the match three more times before the Eagles were able to secure set one on a Julia Haggerty kill, 26-24.
Set 2-Â The teams tied early at three, BC found the upper-hand with a 7-1 run. The Bearcats never quite caught up as two kills from Haggerty pushed the Eagles' lead to 17-11. BC capped off the set with a 4-1 run, for a score of 25-18.
Set 3- The Eagles jumped to a 5-1 advantage. The Bearcats found six ties throughout the third set. Binghamton took five of the last seven points to take the set 25-22, with a kill from Johanna Remy.
Set 4-Â Neither team found more than a five-point lead until BU tallied five points at the conclusion of the set to take the win, 25-20.
Set 5- The Eagles took an early 11-7 lead before the Bearcats rallied to tie the deciding set at 13-all. Binghamton scored the last five points of the game to secure set five, 15-13.

The Eagles return to action next weekend at the Bulldog Classic with matches against Jacksonville, Georgia, and Utah Valley.Â
