BC Defeats Alcorn State in Straight Sets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Boston College Volleyball (7-1, 0-0 ACC) earned its second and final victory of the Carrie Yerty Classic, as it defeated Alcorn State (0-9, 0-0 SWAC) in straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles earned their first victory against the Braves in program history, marking the beginning of a brand-new series.
Audrey Ross had another 13-kill performance, while Sam Hoppes logged 11 for herself on a .444 hitting percentage. Isabelle Poehlein made her first start of the season, logging eight kills on 18 attempts. Brooklyn Yelland and Lucie Vesela each collected two service aces as well, with Vesela adding a team-best 14 assists.
Boston College took an early 3-0 advantage to get things rolling. They continued to hold a lead before Alcorn State scored six-straight points to grab a 10-8 lead. Back-to-back attacking errors from the Braves brought the contest level, as a service ace from Yelland and three kills from Ross followed to spark a four-point run and give the Eagles a 17-13 lead. The visitors piled on, as Hoppes and Ross combined for four kills in the closing points, helping give Boston College the first set, 25-21.
The second set saw Alcorn State jump out to a 5-1 lead, extending it to 9-4 in the opening rallies. The Eagles answered in control, as Poehlein and Ross each grabbed two kills and forced the Braves into multiple errors, going on a 10-2 scoring run to give them a 14-11 edge midway through the set. Alcorn State would close the gap to within a point, but BC responded once again with a 4-1 mini run to push its lead back to four. Multiple forced errors and a kill from Ava Castro were enough to see the Eagles prevail in the second set by a score of 25-20.
The third and final set saw both sides trade the lead. With the contest tied at 10 apiece, Boston College rattled off six straight after Naomi Watson, Ross, and Hoppes each recorded a kill, and Vesela secured multiple service aces, making it 16-10. Hoppes and Castro would then combine for the Eagles' next six kills to give them a 23-17. Laney Blevins and Poehlein closed the contest with kills of their own, helping them take the set 25-18, and the match.
