Ross and Hoppes combine for 34 kills in victory

HANOVER, N.H. – Boston College Volleyball (8-1, 0-0 ACC) opened the Dartmouth Invitational with a victory over Quinnipiac (1-8, 0-0 Metro) on Friday evening, defeating them in five sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-27, 23-25, 15-8).

The Eagles extend their winning streak to eight against the Bobcats, also earning their second win against them this season.

Sam Hoppes and Audrey Ross led the way offensively with 17 kills apiece, while Isabelle Poehlein added 10 kills on a .421 hitting percentage. Lucie Vesela logged 30 assists to lead all players, and Lucy Mott had two service aces, a season-best. Defensively, Naomi Watson (13), Laney Blevins (7), and Poehlein (6) all notched career-bests in blocks, combining for 26 of Boston College's 40 total blocks.

Boston College jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening set following an initial kill from Poehlein. Quinnipiac responded to take a 6-5 edge before both sides traded points in a back-and-forth frame. After the Bobcats grabbed a 15-12 advantage, Boston College rallied with kills from Ross and a combined block by Watson and Hoppes to level the score at 16-16. A service ace from Mott and a Poehlein kill sparked a run that gave BC a 21-19 lead. Tied 21-21, Ross put down two late kills and Sofija Marjanovic landed an ace to set up set point, which the Eagles secured via a Watson solo block to win the first set, 25-22.

The second set saw Quinnipiac grab a 3-1 lead before BC leveled the score at 5-5 following a block by Marjanovic and Watson. Tied 9-9, the Eagles assembled a crucial mid-set run behind kills from Marjanovic and Hoppes, along with a block from Blevins and Marjanovic, taking a 17-12 lead. Quinnipiac trimmed the deficit to 22-20 late, but BC closed out the set with three straight points, highlighted by kills from Hoppes and Ross and a solo block by Hoppes, claiming set two, 25-20.

The third set featured tight action early before Quinnipiac put together a 7-0 run to open up a 13-6 advantage. Boston College mounted a steady comeback behind kills from Ava Castro, Hoppes, and Poehlein, alongside a service ace from Yelland and blocks by Blevins, Poehlein, and Watson, tying the set at 19-19 and taking a 20-19 lead. The teams traded points into extra rallies, with BC holding match point at 25-24 after a Hoppes kill. Quinnipiac staved off elimination with three straight points to extend the match, taking the third set 27-25.

Quinnipiac carried momentum into the fourth set before BC established a 9-7 lead on a block by Blevins and Hoppes, and a Castro kill. The Bobcats then used a 5-0 run to swing the score to 17-14 in their favor. Boston College answered with five unanswered points of its own, as Ross and Hoppes combined for four kills to regain a 19-17 edge. Quinnipiac rallied late to take a 24-21 lead. BC erased two set points on back-to-back blocks from Poehlein and Blevins, but Quinnipiac forced a fifth set with a 25-23 set four win.

Tied 3-3 in the deciding fifth set, Boston College took control with a decisive 6-0 scoring run. Hoppes sparked the surge with three kills and two blocks alongside Watson to build a 9-3 cushion. The Eagles would not relent, as Ross delivered a kill to reach match point at 14-8. Boston College finished by clinching the five-set victory on an attack error forced by a Poehlein and Watson block to take the set 15-8.
