
Eagles Suffer Loss to UNC

BC falls in four sets to the Tar Heels
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The Boston College volleyball team fell to UNC in its opening weekend ACC play. The Eagles took the second set, but fell in four to the Tar Heels in scores of, 19-25, 26-24, 23-25, and 21-24.
Halle Schroder led the way for the Eagles with a double-double on 17 kills and 17 digs, both team highs. Julia Haggerty added a career-high 12 blocks including two solo blocks. Sequoia Layne finished the match with a career-high nine kills tacking on two digs and one block. Sophia Lambros and Jane Petrie guided the offense adding on 34 assists, Lambros led with 18.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1: After locking up the first set eight times early, kills by Anna Herrington and Schroder put the Eagles up 15-12. However the Tar Heels were able to meet the Eagles at 16-16 on a three point run. After each team traded points with Haggerty adding a kill, UNC took eight of the last nine points to close out the first set 25-19.
SET 2: UNC shot out to a commanding six point lead, 8-14. The Eagles were able to capture four of the next seven points to stay within five. The Eagles responded taking nine points gaining its first lead of the game 21-18. The Tar Heels responded with a run of their own to tie the set 24-24. The Eagles were able to close out the set off of a UNC error and a block by Haggerty and Schroder, 26-24.
SET 3: BC got off to an early 7-3 lead in the third set. The Tar Heels fought back to tie the set at 14, UNC continued to respond, taking a six point lead forcing a BC timeout. The Eagles brought it to within one, on kills by Schroder, Haggerty, and Layne then back-to-back blocks by Herrington and Haggerty. UNC responded and pushed their lead. The Tar Heels closed the set, scoring two of the last three points, 23-25.Â
SET 4: Set four was another battle, as both teams went back and forth, taking multiple runs. The Eagles opened the set on a six point run to a 9-6 advantage. The Tar Heels responded by earning seven of the following nine points to take a two-point lead, 11-13. BC answered to tie things at 13. After trading runs, North Carolina maneuvered their way to a four-point edge as the Eagles kept fighting to keep the match alive, down 2-1. The Eagles got back within two on UNC errors, but the Tar Heels answered, closing the match 21-25.Â

The Eagles return to action and continue ACC play next week Friday, Oct. 4 to face-off Pitt at 7:00 PM in Chestnut Hill.
