Eagles Fall to No.1 Pitt in Four Sets

Eagles take a set against the Panthers, breaking their 36 set win streak
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.-- The Boston College volleyball team fell in its ACC home opener, dropping a four set match to No. 1 Pitt, with scores of 25-23, 7-25, 9-25, and 25-20. The Eagles marked the first team to capture a set against the undefeated Panthers, who had 36 straight set wins.
Individually, BC was led by Julia Haggerty who notched eight kills and 11 total blocks. Sam Hoppes and Halle Schroder each added six kills, Hoppes led the match with a .545 hitting percentage. Sophia Lambros and Schroder led the back row each tacking on six digs, while Lambros and Jane Petire guided the offense both adding 12 assists.Â
The Eagles led the match with 16 blocks the most the Panthers have suffered this season, with Haggerty and Schroder adding a solo block Friday night.  Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1: Pitt opened the first frame, going up early 6-3, but BC answered, scoring seven of the next eleven points to tie the match 10-10. Both teams battled locking the set two more times until a Pitt run opened the score by five. The Eagles responded after a BC timeout going on a 7-1 run led by Hoppes adding a kill and block. The Panthers called a timeout tied at 20, both teams traded points twice until a solo block by Schroder and a kill by Audrey Ross put the Eagles in set point. BC closed out the frame off of a Haggerty and Anna Herrington block, 25-23.Â
SET 2: The momentum began to swing in the second set after hitting .200 compared to the Panthers -.048 in the first, the Eagles hit -.190 to Pitt's .353. As a result, Pitt was able to capture the set. The Panthers went on multiple runs to take a 19-4 lead. The Eagles were not able to overcome the deficit falling to Pitt, 25-7.
SET 3:Â Pitt carried its set two win momentum into the third set, where they opened up in a commanding 10-2 fashion. BC showed some fight, but could not get within striking distance of the Panthers. The Eagles dropped the third frame, 25-9.
SET 4: The Eagles held a narrow lead to open up the fourth set, until the Panthers resumed play out of an early timeout to tie the score 2-2. The set went back and forth, as the lead was exchanged three times. The Panthers responded, gaining five of the next six points. BC fought back to within four points on a three point run on a block from both Haggerty and Herrington. Pitt was able to close out the set scoring three of the last four to finish out the match, 25-20. Â
