Eagles Drop Five-Set Battle with No. 17 SMU

Eagles captured the second and fourth set to take No. 17 SMU to deciding set
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.-- The Boston College volleyball team dropped a five-setter to No.17 SMU with set scores of 17-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-16, and 10-15. After taking the second and fourth set, the Mustangs were able to bounce back in the fifth capturing the match.
Individually, BC was led by Julia Haggerty who added 16 points to the board with 10 kills on a .562 hitting percentage adding nine blocks including three solo. Audrey Ross led the team in kills adding 14 and two blocks with Halle Schroder following with 12Â kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Libero Morgan Riddle added 12 digs and two assists in the effort, while setter Sophia Lambros logged 20 assists, seven digs, and two aces.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1: The Mustangs opened the first frame on an early run capturing eight of the first 11 points. The Eagles responded on a three point run led by back-to-back aces from Lambros. Boston College continued the momentum, gaining four of the next six points to lock the set at 12. SMU gained a two point lead for points to be traded twice. The Mustangs went on a three point run to take a five point lead. The Eagles were not able to close the margin to close out the set, 25-17.
SET 2: The Eagles responded in the second set taking an early three point advantage. Both teams traded points once for the Eagles to then go on a four point run led by Haggerty with two blocks. The Mustangs went on a run of its own taking six points to tie the set 10-10. BC captured six of the next eight points for a four point lead forcing a SMU timeout. The Mustangs got as close as two points closing out the second set. BC went on to close the second set out with a kill from Schroder, to win the second frame 25-22.Â
SET 3: SMU started strong in the third set going up early 5-2. The Eagles answered marching within one of the Mustangs but another SMU run opened the score. SMU continued to go on multiple runs to take a five point lead midway through the set. A three point Mustang run called an Eagle timeout. BC went on its own three point run out of the timeout to get within three, 21-18. SMU closed out the set on back-to-back aces, 25-18.
SET 4: BC carried its set two momentum into the fourth. The Eagles opened the set in dominant fashion, earning 10 of the first 13 points, on multiple three point runs. SMU punched back, on a three point run, but BC had another quality response, collecting five unanswered points, forcing a SMU timeout. Points traded until a kill by Haggerty gave the Eagles the largest lead of the day, 19-8. The Eagles closed out the set on a SMU error, 25-16. The Eagles fourth set performance led the night with a .500 percent clip, Anna Herrington led the set adding five kills on five attacks.Â
SET 5: The Eagles held a narrow lead for the beginning portion of the best to 15 decider. SMU expanded a one point deficit to a two point advantage, on three straight points. The Eagles continued to show effort tying the match 4-4, SMU answered on four point run to go up four. A three point BC run by sophomore trio, Schroder, Sam Hoppes, and Ross put the Eagles within striking distance. A set of Mustang runs closed the set, earning four of the last five, to take down the Eagles with a five set score of 15-10.
