Eagles Reverse Sweep Cal in Five Set Thriller

BC secures its first ACC win of the season
Berkeley, Calif.--Â The Boston College volleyball team secured its first ACC victory on the road against Cal, in five sets Friday night, with scores of 21-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19, and 19-17.
Halle Schroder added 16 kills in the win over the Golden Bears, and earned her eighth double-double of the season adding on 18 digs. Julia Haggerty contributed eight kills while hitting .350 in the match, and added a match high 10 blocks.Â
Aubrey Moore noted a career-high 25 assists and added three aces and eight digs. Brooklyn Yelland led the back row with 22 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1: Cal took an early lead in the first set after a five point run, 9-3. The Eagles were within two, after three Golden Bear errors and a Haggerty kill. After trading points twice Cal added two for the Eagles to add three, locking the match for the first time at 13. The Golden Bears and Eagles continued to fight, knotting up the score four times, until Cal pushed its lead to two. BC was unable to respond with Cal capturing three of the last four points, 25-21.
SET 2: Set two opened in similar fashion. Cal opened the set taking a 6-3 advantage, the Eagles battled back to within two, until another Golden Bears run opened the lead to four, forcing a BC timeout. A Haggerty kill kicked-off a four point run, which tied the set. The Cal Bears strung together four straight to go up 21-17. BC kept within striking distance but could never sneak past Cal in the second frame. The Golden Bears won the set, 25-21.Â
SET 3: BC got back on track in the third set, getting off to a 10-6 lead. Cal collected two straight out of a Golden Bear timeout. BC continued to push increasing the lead to six with an ace from Yelland. Cal was never able to close the gap, as the Eagles went on multiple point runs. Audrey Ross led the set with four kills on nine swings.
SET 4: The Eagles took a commanding fourth set lead going up 12-2. Cal surged back into contention on a five point run. The Golden Bears were able to get within three, but the early Eagle advantage was too large to overcome. BC closed out the fourth set, taking four of the last five points, 25-19.
SET 5: The Eagles started the deciding set down, tying the score at six off of a Lucy Mott ace. Cal responded on a four point run to take a commanding lead in the 15 point set, forcing a BC timeout. The Eagles returned to the floor on a three point run, 12-13, to then claim three of the next five points, locking the set at 15. BC sealed the deal, logging four of the final six points after locking the set three times. Ross put her stamp on the match with a kill for the win, 19-17.Â
