March 10, 2024 | Baseball
Eagles tally season-high seven home runs in comeback attempt
The Wolfpack jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning, chasing BC starter Matthew Nunan (Egg Harbor, N.J) after 2.1 innings of work. Patrick Roche (Milton, Mass.) led off the third inning with a triple, and Nick Wang (Newton, Mass.) brought him home on a sacrifice fly to cut it to 3-1.
After four more Wolfpack runs, Kyle Wolff (Andover, Mass.) got one back with his second home-run of the year in the top of the third. The Eagles went on to cut the deficit to 7-6 in the fifth, started off by a 437-foot, two-run home-run from Nick Wang, his fourth of the year. Two batters later, and Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.) followed suit, driving a solo shot to right-center for his team-leading fifth long ball of the season. Kyle Wolff added his third homer of the season, and second of the day, going back-to-back with Leary.
The Eagles did not go quietly, putting ten runs on the board over the final three innings. Leary added an RBI sacrifice fly in the the seventh, and in the eighth, Cam Caraher (Plymouth, Mass.) tallied his first home-run of the season. Later in that frame, Nick Wang continued his scorching hot weekend with his second home-run of the afternoon, third of the weekend, and fifth of the season, a three-run shot to tie Cameron Leary for the team-lead (5). The eighth-inning rally continued with Kyle Wolff, who picked up his fourth hit of the afternoon on an RBI single, capping a five-run frame. The rally continued into the ninth, when three Eagles drew walks and Patrick Roche took advantage, launching a grand slam deep to left field to bring the Eagles within two. The tying run would eventually reach first in the final frame before the Wolfpack finally put it away.
Wang finished going 3-for-4 with two home-runs, a double, and six RBI at the plate. Wolff finished going 4-for-5 with two home-runs and three RBI. Roche capped his strong weekend with a 2-for-4 showing, with a triple and a grand slam.
NC State's offense outlasted the rallies from the Eagles, scoring eleven runs across the final four innings to take game three and the series win.
Matthew Nunan (0-1) was issued the loss for Boston College. Shane Van Dam (2-0) earned the win, and Carson Kelly earned the save (1) for the Wolfpack.
Boston College will turn around for their home opener on Tuesday afternoon against Merrimack, and follow with a Wednesday afternoon home game vs. Siena College, before traveling to Pittsburgh next weekend for their second conference series of the year.
