Eagles come back from a two set deficit to fall in fifth
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.-- The Boston College Volleyball team dropped a five set match to Virginia with set scores of 20-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-21, and 12-15. After being down two sets the Eagles were able to capture the third and fourth, but were unable to secure the fifth set. In the five-set thriller the score locked 33 times while the lead changed 15.Â
Individually, BC was led by Audrey Ross who added 17 points to the board with 16 kills on a .316 hitting percentage contributing two blocks. Cornelia Roach led the team with a clip of .500 adding three kills and four blocks. Jenna Pollock had a season high, seven kills on a .353 hitting percentage. Halle Schroder added her 10th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs.Â
The defense was led by libero Brooklyn Yelland adding 13 digs, while the front row's defense was led by Julia Haggerty adding five blocks. The offense was guided by Sophia Lambros and Jane Petrie combined for 37 assists, Lambros led with 21.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1: The Cavaliers opened the first frame on an early run, capturing a 5-1 lead. The Eagles responded on two 5-0 runs to take a one point advantage. Both teams traded points, UVA gained the lead on an attack error, but the Eagles locked the score at 20, on a Virginia service error. The Cavaliers went on to gain five points to close out the match, 25-20.
SET 2: The second set opened in a similar fashion, Virginia took a commanding nine point lead. The Eagles rallied on multiple two point runs, but a UVA six point run secured the match in their favor, 25-14.
SET 3: The Eagles responded in the third set, locking the score 13 times, with seven lead changes. UVA regained the lead, 21-18 until a seven point run by the Eagles closed out the third set. Schroder led the way for the Eagles in the run adding a kill and an ace. Schroder added four kills in the third set hitting a .429 adding on two aces in the set.
SET 4:The momentum continued for the Eagles in the fourth taking a 6-4 lead, off of a four point run led by Pollock. UVA punched back on multiple two point runs taking a one point advantage. BC had a quality response, collecting four unanswered points. UVA gained two for the Eagles to follow suit. Virginia attempted to climb back but BC answered with multiple two point runs to close out the set 25-21. Pollock led the set adding four kills with a .667 percent clip. The Eagles had a .500 hitting percentage in the fourth adding a match high 17 kills.Â
SET 5: The Eagles held a narrow lead for the beginning portion of the best to 15 decider. UVA went on a three point run to take a two point advantage. BC answered, tying the match at nine after back-to-back Cavalier errors. A set of Virginia runs closed the set, earning six of the last nine points, to take down the Eagles with a five set score of 15-12.
