Cargill Lifts Eagles Past Jacksonville 1-0 at Home
September 01, 2023 | Men's Soccer
NEWTON, Mass. – Ted Cargill scored his third career goal in the 37th minute, proving to be the game-winner in a 1-0 Boston College shutout over Jacksonville on Friday night in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
The Eagles improved to 2-1-0 on the young season and 2-0-0 at home, while the Dolphins dropped to 0-3-0.
Freshman Xavier O'Neil generated several chances in the first half and rung the right post from the left side of the Jacksonville 18-yard box.
O'Neil set up Cargill for the game's lone goal late in the first half along the left flank. Cargill powered his way down the left side of the Dolphins' box before ripping a low shot inside the near post to beat Christian Sekanina.
Brennan Klein posted his second straight shutout and sixth of his career, making both his saves in the second half. Klein's best stop came on a diving effort to his left to deny Owen Guske at the right post.
Jacksonville grazed the crossbar in the closing minutes but the Eagles cleared a corner kick in the final seconds to seal the win.
O'Neil and classmate Alfie Hughes each had three shots to lead the team.
BC returns to action on Monday night with a home match against Green Bay at 5:30 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
