Murphy's Second Half Strike Lifts Eagles Past Merrimack in Opener

NEWTON, Mass. – A left-footed screamer from Jonathan Murphy in the 66th minute proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Boston College shutout victory over Merrimack on Thursday afternoon in the season opener for both squads at the Newton Soccer Complex.
Murphy delivered his first collegiate goal from the edge of the 18-yard box on a layoff from classmate Aidan Farwell. The junior cut inside on his left foot and drove a shot into the upper left corner to beat Warrior keeper Nelton Semedo.
Senior Brennan Klein made three saves to post his fifth career shutout in the BC net. The Eagles doubled up the Warriors in shots on goal, 6-3.
Augustine Boadi nearly opened the scoring 10 minutes into the match when he chipped Semedo, but it was cleared off the line by a Merrimack defender. Drew Serafino also had a quality look from inside the box in the first half but Semedo dove to his right to make the save.Â
Boadi and rookie Xavier O'Neil earned chances early in the second half before Murphy's winner broke the deadlock.
Boston College hits the road on Monday to face Quinnipiac at 2 p.m.
