
Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short in Series Finale

BC bullpen puts for strong effort in 4-2 loss to the Demon Deacons.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 17 Boston College fell to No. 2 Wake Forest, 4-2, in the series rubber-match at David F. Couch Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles dropped to 30-16 overall and 14-13 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons improved to 39-7 and 18-5.

The two sides combined for three home runs, all solo shots, in the first two innings. Wake struck first with first baseman Nick Kurtz going deep before BC junior first baseman Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) tied the game in the second on his third home run of the weekend. The Demon Deacons went back in front an inning later on a home run by designated hitter Danny Corona.

It was a bullpen day for Boston College as the Eagles used six pitchers. For Wake Forest, lefty Josh Hartle (9-2) tossed seven innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts and scattered six hits and a walk.

Making his second appearance of the weekend, sophomore RHP Eric Schroeder (Ridgewood, N.J.) lasted two innings in the start. Schroeder (5-4) gave up two runs on solo home runs, walked one and struck out two.

The Eagles rallied for a run in the top of the ninth and got the tying run to scoring position. After BC made the second out at the plate on a base hit to right, senior center fielder Barry Walsh (Sterling, Mass.) drove in a run with a bases-loaded single. The game ended with the bases loaded on a force out at second base that was reviewed and upheld.
