Eagles Fall to Northwestern in NCAA Championship game

BC saw its 13-game win streak snapped; was the program's sixth straight appearance in the title game
CARY, N.C. -- Boston College fell to top-seeded Northwestern in the 2003 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship game.  It marked the sixth consecutive appearance in the national championship game for the Eagles, winning the national title in 2021. Â
Northwestern jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first quarter before Kayla Martello found the back of the next with 10:13 remaining in the second. Â The Eagles struck again less than 50 seconds later, as Belle Smith converted a pass from Jenn Medjid, making it 3-2.
After a yellow card was issued to Hunter Roman at the 7:56 mark, the Wildcats used the player-up advantage to regain a two-goal lead with 6:06 left and made it 5-2 with 3:33 to play in the first half. Â Northwestern tacked on another goal with less than 30 seconds and entered halftime with a 6-2 lead. Â
In the third quarter, Northwestern extended its lead to six before Martello scored her second goal of the match, making it 8-3 with 8:40 left in the period and snapping a string of five unanswered goals by the Wildcats. Â
NU, which held a 17-8 advantage in draw controls on the day, would respond with three straight goals, building an 11-3 lead with 3:43 to go in the period. Â But Belle Smith closed out the third with her second goal of the match, entering the final quarter trailing 11-4.
Boston College would add two more goals in the fourth quarter, as Jenn Medjid and Martello each found the back of the net, but it was not enough to overcome Northwestern on the day.
The Eagles finish the 2023 campaign with a 19-4 record; the loss snapping a 13-game win streak for BC dating back to to March 25. Â BC entered the national championship as the No. 3 seed after capturing both the regular season and postseason championships in the ACC. Medjid, Martello and Dolce were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.Â
