BC Erases Eight-Run Deficit to Reach Beanpot Finals
April 04, 2023 | Baseball
After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the first, BC surrendered five runs on three hits and two errors. The Eagles answered with two runs in the second, but promptly gave up another five-spot.
Graduate right-hander Ian Murphy (Swedesboro, N.J.) steadied the Boston College pitching staff in the middle innings with 2.1-scoreless innings of relief as the lineup produced nine unanswered runs between the fourth and sixth to take the lead.
UMass (4-16) then tied the game at 11-11 in the sixth and went back in front in the seventh on a solo home run from Steve Luttazi. The Eagles then loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth and tied the game on a sacrifice-fly and went ahead for good on a RBI-single from junior first baseman Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.).
The Eagles outhit the Minutemen 15-14 for the game, but were 0-for-7 with the bases loaded.
Graduate right-hander Andrew Roman (Monson, Mass.) got the final four outs of the game to earn his seventh save of the season and induced a double play in the ninth to erase the potential game-tying run off the bases.
