Eagles earn first ACC series sweep since 2017.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 17 Boston College baseball completed its first ACC-series sweep in six years with a come-from-behind, 6-2 win over No. 16 North Carolina at Boshamer Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Back-to-back singles through the left side by freshman catcher Adonys Guzman (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and senior shortstop Vince Cimini (Scranton, Pa.) preceded a sacrifice-fly off the bat of freshman designated hitter Cohl Mercado (Ocean View, N.J.) to make it a 5-2 Boston College lead.
Â
Junior right fielder Travis Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) added to the Eagles' lead with a leadoff-home run to left in the top of the eighth.
Â
Carolina rallied in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded and one out, but BC turned a game-ending, 4-6-3 double play to clinch the series.
Â
Boston College scored in the first on a bases-loaded single by junior left fielder Cameron Leary (Bethpage, N.Y.). North Carolina remained off the board until plating a pair in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead on Eagle right-hander John West (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who scattered five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in a four-inning start. BC answered immediately in the fifth as junior first baseman Joe Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) doubled, stole second and scored on a Leary sacrifice-fly.
Â
Sophomore RHP Eric Schroeder (Ridgewood, N.J.) turned in three-shutout innings of relief. Schroeder (5-2) got the win with one walk and one strikeout on his line. For the Tar Heels, Jake Knapp allowed two runs on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts in the start. Cameron Padgett (2-1) wound up on the short end with two runs against on a hit and a walk without recording an out.
