Overtime Effort Comes Up Short in 84-78 Loss to Wolfpack
December 02, 2023 | Men's Basketball
Jaeden Zackery led four Eagles in double digits with 20 points
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Jaeden Zackery scored 20 points and Quinten Post added 18 but it was not enough as N.C. State held on for an 84-78 overtime win at Conte Forum on Saturday.
Zackery added six rebounds, four assists, and three steals on the day. Â He made 9-of-11 from the charity stripe. Â Post added seven rebounds, two assists, and three blocks.
The Eagles led by one - 75-74 - after two Zackery free throws with 1:42 left in the extra period , but the Wolfpack would close on a 10-3 push as BC made only one of its last seven field goal attempts down the stretch. Â BC, which entered the game as one of the top free throw shooting teams in the country, struggled from the line for the first time this season, connecting on 14-of-26 on the day.
BC started off quickly, as Claudell Harris Jr, would score five points to start the game. Â But the Wolfpack responded with a 13-2 push - including 11 straight over the next six minutes to lead 13-7 with 12:49 left in the opening frame. Â An Armani Mighty basket cut it to one - 13-12 - before NC State scored six straight to push it to 19-12.
N.C. State would build as much as an 11-point cushion - 32-21 - with 3:38 left in the first half. Â But the Eagles closed on a 12-4 push, connecting on their last four field goals of the half, including a 3-pointer from Devin McGlockton at the buzzer, cutting it to a 36-33 deficit at the break.
In the second half, N.C. State pushed its lead back up to eight - 44-36 - with 16:45 left in regulation before BC began to chip away. Â Two Post buckets and a steal and a score by Harris cut it to 44-42 with 14:32 left in the half. Â The two teams would trade baskets for the next 10-plus minutes, as N.C. State could not pull away.Â
Trailing by seven - 65-58 - with 4:43 remaining, BC would use an 8-1 spurt, capped by a turnaround jumper from Post, to tie it up at 66-66 with 1:46 left. Â The Wolfpack would go back up two - 68-66 - with 1:21 to go, but Zackery's driving layup on the next possession was the equalizer with just over a minute on the clock. Â After a defensive stop, Zackery's layup attempt with four seconds left through a ton of contact was no good and the game went to overtime.
Harris had 14 points and five rebounds and McGlockton added 13 points, nine boards, two assists, and a steal.
BC returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 5 when it hosts Central Connecticut. Â Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will air live on ACC Network.
