Broyles Award recognizes the top assistant coach in college football.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Boston College offensive line coach Matt Applebaum has been named a nominee for the Broyles Award, presented by the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation. The Broyles Award honors college football's top assistant coach.
Applebaum returned to Jeff Hafley's staff for his second stint as offensive line coach in 2023. After coaching five All-ACC linemen in 2021, Applebaum moved on to the NFL in the same position with the Miami Dolphins. He returned to a unit that cycled through 11 different starting lineups in 2022. A year later, the Eagles offensive line unit has been one of the best in the country. BC is rushing for 202.5 yards per game, which ranks first in the ACC and 12th in FBS after finishing last in the country in rushing last season. The BC o-line is giving up just 1.20 sacks per game, ranking first in the ACC and 12th in FBS.
Applebaum's offensive line has contributed to a rushing offense that has surpassed 100 yards in all 10 games, 200 yards in five games and twice going over 300 yards. The Eagles' total offense is averaging 397.3 yards per game; seventh in the ACC. The offensive line has also been pivotal in BC's fourth-down success. The Eagles are 25-for-33 (75.7) on fourth downs this season with the most conversions in the country. BC has converted a fourth-down conversion in all 10 games and multiple in nine games, including a season-high four against No. 3 Florida State.
Applebaum has overseen the development of Preseason All-ACC guard Christian Mahogany, who missed 2022 due to injury. Mahogany has twice earned ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week this season.
The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.
