
Furious Comeback Falls Short at No. 8 Duke in ACC First Round

DURHAM, N.C. – No. 5 seed and eighth-ranked Duke held off a furious late comeback from No. 12 seed Boston College and escaped with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday night in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Koskinen Stadium.
The Eagles closed their season with a record of 3-9-5, while the Blue Devils improved to 11-3-2 and advance to the ACC Quarterfinals this weekend against Clemson.
Down 3-0 with 11 minutes to play, freshman Daniel Klaric and sophomore Christian Bejar each scored his first career goal to quickly cut the deficit to one. BC hoisted numerous balls into the Duke box in the closing minutes but could not find an equalizer.
The Blue Devils had a slim 9-7 lead in shots on goal. Sam White and Bejar led the Eagles with three shot attempts each on the night.
Duke opened the scoring just 2:03 into the match when Antino Lopez converted a corner kick from the edge of the 6-yard box.
Boston College found its rhythm during an evenly played first half, but Duke entered halftime with a 1-0 lead. The shots were tied 8-8 at the break.
The Blue Devils turned up the pressure in the second half and extended their lead with a pair of goals 90 seconds apart. Ulfur Bjornsson one-timed a Drew Kerr pass inside the left post off Brennan Klein's glove in the 61st minute, and Kerr set up Ruben Messales at the back post in the 63rd minute.
With 10 and a half minutes remaining, Klaric followed a shot from Bejar and blasted a volley into the net from outside the 18-yard box to put BC on the board.
70 seconds later, Bejar located a loose ball off a run from Marco Dos Santos and beat Julian Eyestone to the right post with a low left-footed shot. Bejar posted three points on a goal and an assist.
Klein made six saves in his final start of the season.
