No. 18 Eagles and Catamounts Skate to 1-1 Hockey East Tie
January 20, 2023 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Joel Maatta converted in the fifth round of a shootout to give Vermont an extra Hockey East point following a 1-1 tie with No. 18 Boston College on Friday night at Kelley Rink to open a weekend series.
The Eagles pushed their record to 9-6-5 (5-3-4 HEA) despite a 35-22 shot advantage over the Catamounts (7-13-3, 2-10-1 HEA).
Freshman Cutter Gauthier scored Boston College's lone goal, his team-high 12th of the season, and also scored to begin the shootout.
BC earned a major power play at the 5:45 mark of the first period on a high cross check against Robbie Stucker that also resulted in a game misconduct. Eamon Powell set up Gauthier along the right wing and the rookie uncorked a heavy shot from the top of the circle that beat Gabe Carriere high glove side at 6:04.
UVM tied the game on its own power play at 16:20 when Isak Walther followed a Maatta shot that hit the crossbar from close range.
Gauthier nearly restored the lead in the second period but rang the left post from the slot and fanned on a bouncing rebound.
BC had another major power play in the third period on a facemasking call against Porter Schachle, but Vermont kept the Eagles off the scoresheet and finished the night 4-for-5 on the kill.
The schools traded chances in overtime and Marshall Warren nearly scored his second straight OT winner, but Carriere slid over to deny Warren on a one-timer from the low left circle. Carriere posted 34 saves for the visitors.
The teams close the weekend series on Saturday on NESN+ with a 5 p.m. faceoff at Kelley Rink. For tickets, call (617) 552-GoBC or visit BCEagles.com.
