Power Play Leads Vermont Past No. 18 Eagles 3-2 in Series Finale
January 21, 2023 | Men's Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Will Zapernick scored two of Vermont's three power play goals in the second period and the Catamounts held on for a 3-2 Hockey East victory over No. 18 Boston College on Saturday night at Kelley Rink to close a weekend series.
The Eagles out-shot the Catamounts 28-21 but fell to 9-7-5 (5-4-4 HEA) while UVM improved to 8-13-3 (3-10-1 HEA).
BC took the lead 85 seconds into the game when Nikita Nesterenko collected a pass from Eamon Powell in the left wing circle and sniped the top right corner on the power play.
Andrei Buyalsky's right wing one-timer tied the game 56 seconds into the second period during a Catamount power play.
Colby Ambrosio restored the lead at 6:50 shortly after a BC power play had expired. Nesterenko threaded a pass down the middle of the ice to send Ambrosio into the UVM zone, and the junior deked forehand to lift a shot over the glove of Oskar Autio (26 saves).
UVM capitalized on another power play at the 9:28 mark when Zapernick picked the top corner glove side from the right wing circle. Zapernick then handed Vermont its first lead with a top shelf one-timer from the opposite wing at 14:04 with the man advantage.
The Eagles killed off major penalties against Seamus Powell and Cutter Gauthier as well as a minor against Marshall Warren in the third period. BC generated several shorthanded chances during the second major and pulled Mitch Benson for an extra skater in the closing minutes, but couldn't force overtime.
Boston College renews its rivalry with Boston University in the Battle of Comm Ave next weekend, beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Agganis Arena. The series concludes on Saturday night at Kelley Rink at 7 p.m.
