Eagles Push Cardinals to Brink, Fall to UofL

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Boston College women's basketball pushed the Louisville Cardinals to the brink, but fell by a score of 73-65 on Thursday evening inside KFC Yum! Center.
Boston College falls to 13-8 and 3-5 in league action, while the Cards are now 15-6 and 6-2 in the ACC.Â
Taina Mair scored a career-high on the road with 16 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed four off the glass. JoJo Lacey put forth an efficient effort with 15 points, shot 4-of-7 from the floor, totaled six rebounds and four helpers.Â
Ally VanTimmeren stepped up off the bench with multiple players in foul trouble and scored 13 points. Dontavia Waggoner led the team with nine rebounds on top of eight points and a pair of swipes.Â
The Eagles withstood a 14-point deficit in the first half to take a 31-27 lead in the second period. Four players scored during an 11-0 surge while trailing 27-20 to give the Eagles momentum and the edge. Louisville scored the final five points to go into the second half with a one-point advantage.Â
BC got back into the contest thanks to 56.3 percent shooting in the frame and limited UofL to 3-of-10 shooting from the field.Â
The Cardinals were able to jump out to an eight-point lead on two occasions late in the third, including a 48-40 lead in which BC was able to respond with an 8-2 spur that sliced the lead to one possession going into the fourth. VanTimmeren highlighted the run with five of the points and Lacey converting an and-1 on the final possession of the frame.Â
It was a tight-knit affair in the early part of the fourth, where the Eagles stayed within striking distance. T'Yana Todd followed up a Hailey Van Lith basket to tie up the game at 57-apiece with 5:20 left in the game. However the Cardinals scored the next seven points to take a commanding lead. VanTimmeren's trifecta with under a minute sliced the gap to four, but UofL sealed the win at the line.Â
Boston College and UofL tied in the rebounding battle (29-29) and hit one more field goal than the hosts. Louisville held a 19-8 edge at the charity stripe.Â
The Eagles return to action on Sunday to face Clemson at 12 p.m. inside Conte Forum. BC will retire Carolyn Swords' jersey during the contest.Â
