No. 1 Clemson Holds Off Late Boston College Charge in ACC Opener
September 10, 2022 | Men's Soccer
NEWTON, Mass. – No. 1 Clemson held off a late charge from 10-man Boston College and the defending national champions secured a 2-1 win over the Eagles on Saturday night in the ACC opener at the Newton Soccer Complex.
BC (2-2-1, 0-1-0 ACC) saw its home unbeaten streak snapped at 12 games following an 8-0-4 run which dated back to a 3-2 defeat to Clemson during the 2021 spring season.
Near the end of a tight first half, Tim Ströbeck took advantage of a Boston College turnover on the edge of the 18-yard box to give Clemson (5-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute.
In the 62nd minute, freshman CJ Williams was handed a red card for a sliding challenge and the Eagles were down to 10 men. The Tigers doubled their lead five minutes later when Adam Lundegard finished a cross from Ousmane Sylla at the back post.
Within two minutes, BC had an answer from Stefan Sigurdarson on the senior's sixth goal in five matches. Jonathan Murphy played an aerial ball over the Clemson backline, and Sigurdarson slammed a half-volley past Trevor Manion with his right foot.
The Eagles mounted a furious comeback attempt in the closing minutes, but couldn't find an equalizer.
Boston College returns to Newton next Friday to host Louisville at 7 p.m. The team will host its annual Go4theGoal Fundraiser to benefit pediatric cancer. Click here to donate.
