Will Face Maryland for Trip to Finals
NEWTON, Mass. - For the fifth straight season, the Boston College lacrosse team is headed to the NCAA Semifinals after a 20-13 victory over No. 6 Loyola Maryland on Thursday afternoon in Newton.Â
The Eagles will face No. 2 Maryland next Friday, May 27 in Baltimore, Md. at the Homewood Field hosted by Johns Hopkins.Â
It was a high-scoring affair in which both teams combined for 33 goals, while the Eagles reached the 20-score mark for the sixth time this season. The win gives BC it's 10th straight win at Newton when hosting the NCAA Tournament.Â
Four players recorded hat tricks, with Belle Smith firing in a career-high seven goals on the day. The sophomore also tallied two caused turnovers and one ground ball.Â
Jenn Medjid tallied a season-high eight points in her best outing of the season with five goals and three assists. Kayla Martello tied a personal high with four scores, while Charlotte North turned in a hat trick with three assists for six points.Â
It was a back-and-forth start as the game was in a 4-4 tie until Smith found the back of the net on a free position shot with .6 seconds left in what started a 6-1 surge that stretched into the second period.Â
Smith scored three of the four goals during the run while Martello and Medjid fired in goals. BC went into the half with a 10-5 advantage.Â
Loyola Maryland wouldn't go away quietly, where it sliced the deficit to 11-9 with 8:56 left in the third period. It was as close the Greyhounds would get thanks to three goals from Smith and Medjid to send the Eagles into the fourth with a 14-9 lead.Â
Smith and Hollie Schleicher scored twice early in the final frame to push the lead to six. BC pulled away for the seven-goal victory to reach one step closer to its goal.Â
Hunter Roman tied a personal best with four ground balls, while Schleicher led the way with six draw controls and tallied two caused turnovers with one ground ball. Courtney Taylor posted a team-best three caused turnovers and tallied three ground balls. Cassidy Weeks tied a team high with three helpers. Rachel Hall earned eight saves for the second straight game between the posts.
