Doubleheader split on Friday secures first ACC series win of 2022
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Boston College softball split a doubleheader with Pittsburgh on Friday to secure a series win. Pitt took game one by a score of 7-4. BC won game two 7-3.
In game one of the doubleheader, Ellie Mataya hit her first home run of the season, a two-run blast. Abigail Knight picked up three hits, including two doubles. Nicole Giery picked up two RBI for BC. In the circle, Peyton Schnackenberg's record dropped to 7-5. She threw 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, walking two and striking out three. Freshman Abby Dunning took over in the fourth. In her 2.1 innings of work, she allowed three runs on five hits, also walking two and picking up three strikeouts.Â
The series rubber match began with a two-run home run from Pitt in the bottom of the first before Susannah Anderson settled in. Anderson (9-9) twirled her eleventh complete game of the season, scattering seven hits and striking out two in her ninth win of the season.
Senior Gianna Boccagno sparked the Eagles' offense with a game-tying two-run blast in the fourth inning. BC took advantage of Pitt's defensive miscues in the fifth inning and Boccagno picked up another RBI with a sac fly to extend the lead to 6-2. Giery picked up a RBI in the seventh with a double to cap off the scoring.Â
The Battle of Commonwealth Ave. hits the diamond on Wednesday at BU Softball Field as the Eagles (19-20, 5-13) travel to Boston University (27-13). The matchup will be streamed on ESPN+.
