BC and Northeastern Clash Monday Night in 69th Beanpot

BOSTON – After the 2021 tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, Boston College opens up the 69th Beanpot against three-time defending champion Northeastern on Monday night at 8 p.m. at TD Garden on NESN. Radio coverage begins at 7:45 p.m. on WEEI 850 AM and BCEagles.com. Boston University and Harvard begin the tournament at 5 p.m.

SETTING THE SCENE
• Boston College is looking to hoist its first Beanpot trophy since 2016 and its 21st overall
• BC enters the matchup at 10-13-4 overall and 5-9-3 in Hockey East play, while the Huskies come in at 17-8-1 (9-6-1 HEA) after beating Vermont 5-4 on Friday
• The Eagles reached the Championship Game for the 36th time in 2019 but fell to Northeastern 4-2
• The teams are meeting for the 48th time in the Beanpot with BC holding a 34-13 advantage

BEANPOT BREAKDOWN
• BC has won the Beanpot 20 times with 16 runner-up, 24 third-place, and only eight last-place finishes
• Boston College has won seven of the last 13 Beanpots dating back to 2008 but hasn't won the title since beating BU in 2016
• The Eagles' five straight titles from 2010 to 2014 remain a program record
• Alex Tuch scored the overtime game-winning goal over Boston University on Feb. 8, 2016 in the tournament's first-ever 0-0 scoreless regulation finish

SERIES HISTORY
• Monday will mark the 244th all-time meeting in series history with BC leading 172-55-16
• Since falling to NU in the 2019 Hockey East Title Game, the Eagles have won five straight in the series and have out-scored the Huskies 28-10 in those five games
• Northeastern has won the last four Beanpot matchups between the schools, including a 4-2 victory in the 2019 Championship Game
• Prior to that streak, Boston College had won four in a row and 11 of the last 12

• BC scored three straight goals, rallying from 2-1 down to beat Northeastern 5-3 on Oct. 15, 2021 in front of 7,288 fans at Kelley Rink in the Hockey East opener for both teams
• Playing in his 100th career game, senior captain Marc McLaughlin scored twice for the Eagles
• Senior assistant captains Patrick Giles (1-1-2) and Jack McBain (0-3-3) had multi-point nights
• Boston College's penalty kill finished the night 5-for-6, including a five-minute major against Casey Carreau in the first period and a two-man advantage lasting 1:08 in the second

• Gentry Shamburger scored his first NCAA goal on Friday in his 30th career game

• Senior Patrick Giles has scored twice in his three career Beanpot games and both have been the opening goal of the Eagles' semifinal matchup
• Giles collected his first collegiate goal at 4:57 of the first period against Harvard in 2019, then scored 2:15 into the first in the 2020 Semifinal against BU
• He entered the year with seven career goals but has already scored 10 times this season and has already established a new career-high with 15 points
• The Maryland native has also eclipsed his career-high in shots on goal through 26 games played

NEW LETTERS
• Patrick Giles is currently the only captain with the team during the Winter Olympics while Marc McLaughlin (USA) and Jack McBain (Canada) compete in Beijing
• Prior to last Tuesday's game against Harvard, defensemen Marshall Warren and Jack St. Ivany had an 'A' added to their sweaters in the absence of McLaughlin and McBain

ALL-STARS
• Three former Eagles – Johnny Gaudreau, Chris Kreider and Thatcher Demko – were selected to the 2022 NHL All-Star Game in Las Vegas
