Eagles Feast on Orange in ACC Opener

Boston College volleyball scored a 3-1 win over Syracuse inside Power Gym on Wednesday night.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team defeated Syracuse, 3-1, at Power Gym on Wednesday night. The Eagles moved to 11-4 with the win in their ACC opener and snapped a seven-match slide against the Orange (11-2, 0-1) dating back to 2016.
BC won by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-16. BC outhit SU .279 to .180 for the match, including a .325-.111 edge in the final set.
Graduate outside hitter Clare Naughton (Atlanta, Ga.) led all players with a career-high 21 kills; posting 18 through the first three sets. She hit .300 for the match; adding seven digs and three blocks.
Syracuse led early in the first, but it was Naughton's third kill followed by an ace by junior middle blocker Gabby McCaa (Minneapolis, Minn.) that knotted the score at 12-12. The Eagles used a 5-0 run to lead 16-12 and never looked back; lifting their lead as high as nine at 22-13.
Down 10-5 in the second, Boston College took a 12-11 lead near the midway point of the set. However, the Orange finished the game on a 7-2 run to claim their only set of the night.
In the third, a 5-0 Eagle run made it 12-9; forcing a Syracuse timeout. The Orange again called timeout at 19-12, but the Eagles were on their way to a two sets to one advantage as they hit a collective .379 in the frame with five kills by Naughton.
BC dominated the fourth as SU called its first timeout after back-to-back kills from junior right side Izzy Clavenna (Houston, Texas). Freshman middle blocker Jenna Pollock (St. Catharines, Ont.) later knocked down back-to-back kills as the Orange burned their final timeout with the Eagles leading 13-7. Clavenna finished the night with 11 kills on a .348 hitting percentage.
For the match, sophomore setters Grace Penn (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Sophia Lambros (Fullerton, Calif.) collected 24 and 18 assists, respectively. Sophomore libero Anna Murphy (Zionsville, Ind.) picked up a match-high 16 digs.
The Eagles return to action Friday, at Duke for a 7 p.m. match on ACCNX.
