Eagles Outlast Northeastern in Thanksgiving Eve Win

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Stingy defense and a combined 32 points by Taylor Soule and Maria Gakdeng helped the Boston College women's basketball team outlast Northeastern, 57-46, on Wednesday afternoon in Conte Forum.
BC upped its streak to eight straight wins in the series while improving to 4-1 on the season. Northeastern falls to 3-2.
Taylor Soule scored a game-high 21 points on another efficient showing. The senior shot 8-of-10 for her third game of 20 or more points. She also added five rebounds.
Maria Gakdeng followed up her career-high 15 points at Providence on Saturday with her best all-around performance. The freshman turned in 11 points (5-6 FG/FGA), nine rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and two steals. The duo of Soule and Gadkeng shot a combined 13-of-17 and pulled 14 off the glass.
Makayla Dickens scored in double figures for the second straight game, chipping in with 10 points on four baskets to round out the leading scorers.
It was a fourth-quarter push that proved to be the difference. After Northeastern scored six straight points to take a 41-39 lead at the beginning of the period, the Eagles put together an 18-5 run over the final 7:59 of the game.
BC took the lead for good after the Huskies' spurt thanks to three straight baskets by Dickens, Jaelyn Batts, and Soule. Dickens and Batts stepped up as they scored eight points and dished out three assists, having a hand in 14 of the 18 points. The Eagles' defense forced Northeastern to go scoreless over the final 3:47 during an 8-0 spurt that stretched the lead to 11. The offense also finished the contest on a 9-of-13 stretch that started late in the third quarter.
BC didn't trail in the first half despite Northeastern going on a 10-2 run to tie up the game at 17-all going into the second period. The Eagles held Northeastern to 25 percent shooting in the second quarter en route to taking a 28-25 lead going into halftime.
BC couldn't get it going from 3-point range (3-of-21), but did shoot a season-high 62.5 percent from inside the arc while scoring 36 of its points inside the paint.
Defensively, the Eagles held their opponent to a season-low in points and field goal percentage (32.2 percent). BC has held its opponents to 35 percent shooting or less in all four victories, while earning a 26th straight victory when holding an opponent to 65 points or less.
The Eagles will look for a third straight win on Sunday against Albany at 12 p.m. in Conte Forum.
