NEWTON, Mass. — After an early lead, No. 10 Boston College falls to No. 21 Massachusetts in a shootout on Sunday afternoon.
Less than four minutes into the match, Milagros Arteta fired a shot past Massachusetts goalkeeper, Marlise van Tonder with an assist from Jill Joossens to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Sky Caron was able to capitalize on the team's first penalty corner opportunity with an assist from Juliette Hijdra to bring the score to 2-0.
In the second half, UMass tied the game, scoring in the third and fourth quarters - including a goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation. After two scoreless overtime periods, the game went to a shootout and the Minutewomen eventually won the shootout, 8-7.
Jonna Kennedy made seven saves during the match for Boston College. Massachusetts and Boston College tied shots for the day 15-15, with the Eagles having an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Minutewomen were awarded seven penalty corners, while the Eagles had three.
The loss moves the Eagles to 7-3 overall. Next weekend, Boston College will be on the road, against No. 14 Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. and Richmond on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. The match against Virginia will be on the ACC network and the Richmond match will be on ESPN+.
