Five Setter Goes to the Eagles

BC battled back after the third to earn a hard-fought victory over Virginia Tech.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team went the distance for a 3-2, five-set victory over Virginia Tech inside Power Gym on Friday night. The Eagles improved to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the ACC, while the Hokies dropped to 9-6 and 0-3.
BC cruised to a 25-18 win in the first, leading by as many as 10, but Virginia Tech carried over the momentum from late in the first to even the match with a 25-15 win in the second and ultimately going in front with a 25-21 third. The Eagles pulled even with a 25-20 win in the fourth and clinched the night with a 15-13 decisive, fifth set.
Graduate outside hitter Clare Naughton (Atlanta, Ga.) led all players with 17 kills; falling one shy of reaching the 1,000-kill milestone for her career. She added 13 dogs for her sixth double-double of the season and 14th of her career.
Graduate middle blocker Amaka Chukwujekwu (Laurel, Md.), who knocked down the game-winner, notched 10 kills on a .316 hitting percentage. Junior right side Izzy Clavenna (Dallas, Texas) also totaled 10 kills, while adding three blocks.
Sophomore libero Anna Murphy (Zionsville, Ind.) posted 26 digs and 10 assists for her first career double-double. Sophomore setter Grace Penn (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) led the BC offense with 23 assists and added 13 digs in her second double-double effort of the year.
Boston College is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. against Wake Forest. The match will be streamed on ACCNX.
