Men's Hockey Hands Out 2019-20 Team Awards

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College men's hockey program and the Pike's Peak Club have announced the team's award winners for the 2019-20 season. The accolades were released in place of the club's 71st annual postseason awards banquet.
Norman F. Dailey Award: David Cotton, Spencer Knight
The Norman F. Dailey Award is given to the team's most valuable player(s). Cotton established a new career-high in scoring this season with 39 points (15-24-39) while captaining the team. The senior was named a Third Team Hockey East All-Star and moved past Ed Rauseo '84 into the top-50 all-time scorers in program history with 127 points. Cotton ranked eighth in scoring among all Hockey East skaters and was fourth in shots on goal (118).
Knight started all but one game between the pipes and was a top-5 finalist for the Mike Richter Award. The freshman was a Second Team Hockey East All-Star and a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team. Knight became just the fourth goaltender in program history to record five shutouts in a single season. He ranked fifth nationally in winning percentage (.727) and was ninth in both goals against average (1.97) and save percentage (.931).
Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award: Alex Newhook
The Bernie Burke Outstanding Freshman Award is named in honor of the former BC goalie and longtime freshman coach. Newhook became the first Eagle to win the Tim Taylor Award as the NCAA National Rookie of the Year. The forward was also tabbed the Hockey East Rookie of the Year and a Second Team Hockey East All-Star. Newhook led all NCAA freshmen in goals (19), game-winning goals (4) and shorthanded goals (3) in his first collegiate season. He was tied for the team-lead in scoring with 42 points to pace all first-year skaters in Hockey East.
John "Snooks" Kelley Memorial Award: Jesper Mattila, Julius Mattila, Logan Hutsko
The John "Snooks" Kelley Memorial Award is given to the individuals who best typify Boston College Hockey. Jesper was named a Hockey East All-Star for the first time in his career as a member of the Third Team. He led the country in plus-minus at plus-30 during his senior campaign. The Finnish defenseman had nine points on two goals and seven assists and finished his career with 40 points in 142 games.
Julius led the team with 32 assists and was tied for the team-lead in scoring with a career-high 42 points. Mattila finished the season tied for fourth nationally in assists per game and tied for ninth in points per game. The senior forward became the 82nd member of the program's 100-point club against Harvard on Feb. 10. The Mattila brothers were also honored with the team's Academic Achievement Award.
Hutsko closed the year ranked seventh in the nation in goals per game with 19 tallies in 30 games. The junior forward led the team in shots on goal per game (3.7) and was tied for the team-lead with four game-winning goals. The Tampa native was 11th in Hockey East in scoring and had at least one point in all but four games. Hutsko was recently elected as an assistant captain for his senior season.

William J. Flynn Coaches Award: Graham McPhee
The William J. Flynn Coaches Award is decided upon by head coach Jerry York and his staff. McPhee served as the team's assistant captain this season, skating in all 34 contests with five goals and seven assists. The senior forward dedicated his time to special education at Boston College's Campus School, which assists children with disabilities. McPhee finished his four-year career with 22 goals and 33 assists for 55 points in 138 games.
James E. Tiernan Most Improved Player Award: Aapeli Räsänen

The James E. Tiernan Most Improved Player Award is named for the 1956 Beanpot MVP. Entering his junior season with nine career goals and 23 career points, Räsänen finished the year with 11 goals and 24 points in 34 games. The Finnish forward set new career-highs in every major offensive category and posted a plus-14 rating. Räsänen ranked top-5 in Hockey East by winning more than 56% of his faceoffs, while also proving his versatility as a winger throughout the season.
Francis Kirby Connelly Memorial Award: Zach Walker
The Francis Kirby Connelly Memorial Award is given to a member of the BC Hockey community who best exemplifies the ideals of the Ignatian spirit of service to others. Walker led many of the team's community service initiatives this past season, including Team IMPACT, Franciscan Children's Hospital, Best Buddies, Costumes for Cancer 5K, and Mental Health Awareness Week. The forward skated in 28 of the team's 34 games as a senior and collected five assists. Walker was also honored with the program's Academic Excellence Award.Â
