The lacrosse team is set for its 2020 debut on Saturday
CHESNTUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 5 Boston College women's lacrosse team makes its 2020 debut tomorrow afternoon, traveling to take on intra-state rival Massachusetts on Saturday. First draw is set for 1:00 PM.
Going into Saturday's matchup, head coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein's Eagles are 7-0 in their season opening matchups, with six of those occurring on the road. BC hosted its first season opener since hosting Maryland in 2008 just last year against Boston University on Feb. 9. The Eagles opened 2019 with a statement win over the Terriers, tallying a 20-6 victory in Newton.
The Eagles and Minutewomen first met on March 30, 1993 as BC holds a 10-4 all-time advantage over its intra-state rival. BC won the first four meetings, headlined by a dominant 17-1 win in the series opener. The Eagles are on a four-game win streak with the most recent win coming just last season with a 25-14 victory in Amherst. The 25 goals scored by the Eagles marked the most in a single game in program history. Walker-Weinstein is 4-0 over the Minutewomen in her career at BC.
Despite a bitter ending to the 2019 campaign, the Eagles return IWLCA Preseason All-America honorable mentions in attack Cara Urbank and goalkeeper Abbey Ngai. Urbank comes as the teams' returning lead scorer after posting a 55 goal, 19 assist junior season. Ngai earned the starting position between the pipes last season and was a consistent top-5 in the national rankings for save percentage. Senior midfielder Sheila Rietano rounds out the top returners as a Preseason All-ACC Team selection. Rietano posted 35 goals and 14 assists while winning 24 draws.
Adding to the returning power, the Eagles welcomed in transfers Charlotte North from Duke and Rachel Hall from Oregon. North capped her career with the Blue Devils as the leading scorer in both of her seasons, posting the third-best scoring output in the country as a sophomore with 4.32 goals per game. Already at BC, North earned placement on both the Preseason All-ACC Team and was an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America First Team selection. Hall comes to the Heights after a summer stint with the U19 USA National Team where she earned All-World honors through its gold medal campaign. The sophomore was the Ducks' starting goalkeeper as a rookie, as she led the country in saves with 246 through just 18 games played en route to Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors.
Following Saturday's matchup at Massachusetts, the Eagles take a trip down Commonwealth Avenue to face cross-city rival Boston University on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 4:00 PM.
