
BC Heads to Atlanta for ACC/Big 10 Challenge

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College softball team heads to Georgia Tech for the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, where the Eagles will play Iowa and Nebraska from Feb. 14-16 in Atlanta.

Boston College will be facing off against Iowa and Nebraska in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge at Georgia Tech.Â
Iowa is coming off a weekend where they went 4-1, with its only loss against Virginia Tech. Leading the way for the Hawkeyes is Mia Ruther, who is hitting .533 and a run. Â On the mound, Allison Doocy and Lauren Shaw have split time. Doocy has a 1.98 ERA in 17.2 innings of work and 22 strikeouts. Shaw has seen 15.2 innings with a 3.13 ERA and 16 strikeouts.
Leading Nebraska to its 3-2 record has been Tristen Edwards and Peyton Glatter. Edwards is hitting .438 with an OPS of 1.863. She has four home runs and five RBI on just seven hits, while Glatter has three home runs and eight RBI off eight hits.
Last Weekend
The Eagles went 2-3 at the FGCU Kickoff Classic. BC opened the season with a 2-1 win over LIU before dropping the next three against FGCU, Connecticut and Delaware. The Eagles closed the weekend off with a big, 1-0, no-hit win over Georgetown.Â
Leading the Charge
Amy Kvilhaug has taken over as the new head coach of BC softball in 2020. She has made head coaching stops at Radford and St. John's, amassing 400 wins throughout her career. She competed collegiately at Providence, where she holds seven PC career records, including starts (92), games won (72), complete games (84), earned run average (1.20) and shutouts (27). Kvilhaug is also a hall of famer at Providence.Â
A New Staff
The Eagles have an entirely new staff from last year. Head Coach Amy Kvilhaug has hired Olivia Watkins and Matt Alberghini for the 2020 campaign.
Watkins comes to The Heights from Dartmouth, where she served as an assistant coach since 2017. She completed her bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies at Western Kentucky in 2015. During her time on the Big Red, Watkins set career-program records in batting average (.380) and stolen bases (117), while finishing her career ranked in the top-five in OBP (.421), total runs (130), hits (200) and multi-hit games (55). She also has single-season records with a .442 batting average, 51 total runs, 87 hits and 55 stolen bases (on 58 attempts).
Alberghini brings postseason experience to BC, coming from Washington, a program that just made the College World Series. He served as a graduate manager and also helped the team win its first PAC-12 title since 2009. Prior to his time at Washington, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Pitt for a year. Alberghini graduated from Coastal Carolina in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in recreation and sport management and from Washington wth a Master of Education in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership.
Back for More
Junior Emme Martinez is back in 2019 for her junior season and looks to build on an already decorated career in cardinal and gold. She was named aan All-ACC second team honoree in 2019 as a sophomore and to the All-ACC first team and All-ACC freshman team in her first year. In 2019, Martinez started 52 of 53 games, hitting .321 with 50 total hits and 24 RBI.
BC is returning eight players who saw the field in more than 30 games last season. Gianna Baccagno started 52 games last season and led the team with eight home runs and 24 RBI.Â
The Newcomers
There are nine newcomers on the team this year, which makes up 45 percent of the team. Eight of the newcomers are freshman, while there is one transfer, Peyton Schnackenberg, who comes to BC from Syracuse.Â
At Syracuse, Schnackenberg appeared in 10 games, pitching a total of 21.2 innings. She'll be suiting up for the Eagles this season, as she was granted eligibility by the ACC this fall.
Anderson Says "No-No"
In BC's final game of the FGCU Kickoff Classic, sophomore Susannah Anderson pitched a gem for the Eagles. She threw her first-career complete-game no-hitter in BC's 1-0 win, totaling 10 strikeouts on no walks and two HBP.
The no-hitter capped a 2-1 weekend for the Alexandria, Virginia native, who threw 21 total innings while striking out 25 batters.Â
