Eagles Coast Past UMass 7-0 in Home Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College swept UMass 7-0 in its home opener on Thursday afternoon at the Connell Recreation Center. The Eagles improved to 3-0 as they started a four-match week, while the Minutewomen dropped their season opener.
UMass kept it tight during the doubles competition, but Natasha Irani and Yufei Long clinched the opening point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Laura Lopez and Elene Tsokilauri posted a dominant 6-1 victory in the No. 3 slot.
BC carried the momentum into singles, winning four of the six matches in straight sets. Long was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Janja Kovacevic in No. 1 singles and Jodie Annie retired against Irani at No. 2 down 6-1, 3-0.
Lopez lost only three games at No. 4 singles against Martina Bocchi and Hailey Wilcox picked up her first career singles victory in the No. 6 slot over Ashley Avery 6-3, 6-1.Â
Dasha Possokhova needed three sets to move past Anna Napadiy for the fourth Boston College point, while Tsokilauri bested Jovana Bogicevic in a third set tiebreaker after dropping the first set.
The unbeaten Eagles return to action on Friday (Jan. 24) with a short trip to face Harvard at 5 p.m.
