Eagles Move to 2-0 with 45-13 Win over Richmond

AJ Dillon racks up 140 yards of total offense, scores three touchdowns
Anthony Brown was 8-of-14 for 163 yards and three touchdowns, completing passes to seven different receivers. The junior signal caller completed two TD passes of 40 or more yards - a 55-yard connection to Jake Burt and a 42-yard strike to AJ Dillon.
Dillon finished the game with a career-high 54 receiving yards to compliment his 86 yards on the ground. The junior All-American accounted for three touchdowns - two rushing and one receiving. David Bailey gained a season-high 97 yards on 13 rushes, including a 36-yard scamper in the first quarter to set up the second score of the contest. True freshman Zay Flowers gained 92 yards on just three carries - including a 46-yard TD scamper on the opening drive.
Defensively, Mike Palmer led BC with seven tackles, while Max Richardson and Joseph Sparacio tallied five tackles apiece. The linebacking duo combined for three tackles for a loss as BC recorded 12 TFL for a total of 36 yards. Hugh Davis also made five stops. Tate Haynes and Nolan Borgersen each registered their first career interceptions.
For the second time in as many games, Flowers was the first Eagle in the end zone. The true freshman rushed 46 yards off a sweep play, capping a six-play, 71-yard drive just 1:25 into the game.
David Bailey broke open down field with a 36-yard run, setting up BC's second touchdown of the game - a seven-yard connection between Brown and Korab Idrizi, making it 14-0 with 5:25 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Eagles regained possession as Nolan Borgersen pulled down his first career interception at the BC 29 yard line, setting up another TD in the opening period. Dillon capped a seven-play, 71-yard drive, punching it in from two-yards out. Boston College would lead, 21-0, at the end of the first quarter.
Richmond got on the board to start the second quarter, as Joe Mancuso connected on a 35-yard strike to WR Keyston Fuller, making it 21-7 with 13:13 left in the first half.
BC responded with a scoring drive on its next possession. Bailey rushed twice for 23 yards, setting up a 42-yard passing play from Brown to Dillon, making it 28-7 with 11:15 left in the quarter. It was Dillon's second career receiving touchdown.
The Spiders' Jake Larson tacked on a 36-yard field goal, making it 28-10 with 5:18 left.
Brown had his longest passing play of the season - a 55-yarder to Burt - breaking the game open at 35-10 and giving Burt his second career TD reception.
The Eagles made another big-time play on defense, as Haynes intercepted Mancuso at the Richmond 17-yard line. On the ensuing offensive drive, BC turned it over on downs. The Eagles led 35-10 at the half.
Dillon tacked on his third TD of the afternoon midway through the third quarter, plunging into the end zone from two yards out, making it 42-10. The score capped a 12-play, 65-yard drive. It moved Dillon into fourth place all-time on BC's career rushing TD list, with 27.
After the Eagles' defensive corps forced a turnover on downs with 2:46 left in the third quarter, BC made a change under center as QB Dennis Grosel made his season debut. A 29-yard run by Flowers put BC into field goal range and Aaron Boumerhi split the uprights from 30 yards out to end the third quarter. Richmond would add a late fourth quarter field goal, making it 45-13.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boston College posted nine rushes of 10 or more yards - and five of 20 or more yards, led by Flowers' 46-yard TD scamper in the first quarter.
- Anthony Brown logged his fifth career game with at least three passing TD's. BC is 4-1 in those games.
- AJ Dillon registered rushing touchdown No. 26 and 27 of his career, moving him into a tie for fourth place on BC's all-time career list. He is tied with Montel Harris '11, Darnell Campbell ('93), and Troy Stradford ('86). Next on the list is Andre Williams ('13), with 28. Â
- Graduate student Aaron Boumerhi connected on a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter - his first in a BC uniform. For his collegiate career, he has made 32-of-45 FG attempts, including 11-of-13 from inside 30 yards.
- Backup quarterbacks Dennis Grosel and Matt Valecce saw their first action of the season under center. Grosel was 1-of-2 for nine yards.
- BC was 6-of-11 on third down and 0-for-1 on fourth down. The Eagles logged 24 first downs vs. the Spiders - 17 coming in the rushing game.
- Max Richardson led BC in tackles for the third time in his career, and reached double figures in tackles for the second time. Last season, he made 13 stops vs. Syracuse.
- The Eagles made 12 total tackles for a loss - the most in a game since Oct. 13, 2018 when BC had 12 TFL (54 yards) vs. Louisville.
- Danny Longman punted twice for a total of 67 yards, while Grant Carlson punted once for 34 yards.
- Boston College improves to 2-0 for the second straight year and for the fourth time under head coach Steve Addazio.
- BC is now 5-1 all-time versus Richmond.
- The Eagles were 4-for-5 in red zone attempts.
- BC averaged 5.8 yards per play (75 total plays) on the afternoon.
- Boston College hosts Kansas on Friday, Sept. 13 at Alumni Stadium. Kickoff time is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and the game can be seen live on ACC Network.Â
