
Eagles Cap Opening ACC Weekend with Win Over Georgia Tech

The volleyball team begins conference play 2-0 for the second straight year after a win in Atlanta
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Boston College volleyball team (11-4, 2-0 ACC) capped off the opening weekend of conference play with a five-set win over Georgia Tech, Sunday afternoon in Atlanta. The Eagles hopped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match before the Yellow Jackets bounced back, winning the next two sets to force a fifth which BC would ultimately take, 15-11. The win marks the second straight year that the Eagles have opened conference play with a 2-0 record.Â

Junior Clare Naughton led the offensive effort for the Eagles, tallying 16 kills on the day while senior Cat Balido added 15. Senior Sophie West added eight kills on 13 attempts for an error-free .615 hitting percentage while Jane DeJarld had a team-best 35 assists.

Defensively, freshman libero Torey Baum kept up 13 digs with sophomore Jewel Strawberry added 10. The team combined for 23 blocks, led by West and junior Amaka Chukwujekwu who each recorded six blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 –The teams put up an equal fight, forcing extra points in the first set. The Yellow Jackets earned the first lead of the match, hopping to a 7-5 lead before allowing four straight BC points for the Eagles to take the lead, 9-7. Neither team gained more than a one point advantage for the remainder of the set, as a block from Chukwujekwu and Balido sealed the win for BC.
Set 2 –The Eagles held a consistent lead through the first half of the second set, jumping to a 15-12 lead. Georgia Tech reached within two points but never found the momentum to cut the deficit, with BC taking the second set on a Yellow Jacket attack error, 25-21.
Set 3 –The Yellow Jackets bounced back and held the lead through the third set, only allowing the Eagles to tie the set at 4-all before running away with the lead. Georgia Tech earned two four-point rallies to seal the set win, 25-21.
Set 4 –In similar fashion, the set found an early tie at 4-all before Georgia Tech added four straight points to take a comfortable. The teams traded points to push to a 13-12 score in Georgia Tech's favor before the Yellow Jackets tallied off five straight points to go up 18-12. The home team tied the match with four straight points, forcing a fifth set.
Set 5 –The deciding set found four ties before the Eagles rallied off four of the last five points, capped by a set point kill from Naughton, to take the match with a 15-11 set score.Â
