The volleyball team is set to compete in Power Gym for the first time this season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team is set to host Duke and Wake Forest in their first weekend of the 2019 season in Power Gym. Friday's match against the Blue Devils will begin at 7:30 PM while Sunday's against the Demon Deacons is set for 1:00 PM. Both matches will be featured on the ACC Network Extra.
The Eagles ended their five-week road stretch and began conference play with trips to Clemson and Georgia Tech, topping both opponents on the road. The weekend marked the second consecutive year that BC has begun conference play 2-0 while the team earned their first conference road wins under head coach Jason Kennedy. The Eagles jumped to fourth place in the conference standings, joining Pitt, Louisville, Notre Dame and Florida State as the only teams with 2-0 conference records through the opening weekend. Following their five-week road stretch, the Eagles currently have more wins in different states than any other team in Division I, picking up W's in Oregon, Rhode Island, Florida, Connecticut, Massachusetts, South Carolina and Georgia.
The Blue Devils hang onto a 7-8 overall record heading into Friday evenings' match after falling to both Florida State and Miami in their opening conference weekend. Last season, the Eagles suffered their first conference loss of the season to Duke in Durham, N.C. Despite Jewel Strawberry's 10 kills and Ally Mullen's three blocks, the Duke defense held off the Eagles, completing the win in three sets, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17. The Eagles have only topped Duke once in their 21 meetings: a 3-0 sweep on October 6, 2012 in Durham.
Wake Forest also opened the conference season with back-to-back losses at the hands of Miami and Florida State, heading into the weekend with a 10-3 overall record. The team will face Syracuse on Friday in New York before heading to Chestnut Hill on Sunday. The Deacons topped the Eagles early on last season in five sets, despite 16 kills from Cat Balido and three blocks from Amaka Chukwujekwu. The teams traded winning sets and forced the fifth to extra points before deciding a winner. The Eagles last defeated the Deacons in 2017, a 3-0 sweep on Nov. 19 in Power Gym, as Wake Forest holds a 17-5 all-time record over the Eagles. Four of BC's five wins over Wake Forest have taken place in Power Gym, as the Eagles have a 4-7 record against the Deacons at home.
Students are encouraged to join the Eagles in Power Gym Friday night for Student Day, as free pizza will be offered for early arrival. Sunday's competition will recognize program alumni for Alumni Day.
