
Eagles Travel to Clemson, Georgia Tech for ACC Opening Weekend

The volleyball team begins conference play on the road this weekend
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team (9-4, 0-0 ACC) is set to begin conference play this weekend, traveling to take on Clemson (6-5, 0-0 ACC) on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 PM and Georgia Tech (7-4, 0-0 ACC) on Sunday, Sept. 29 at noon. Friday's match will be featured on the ACC Network Extra while Sunday's will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
The Eagles wrapped up their nonconference slate with a 9-4 overall record, most recently taking the top spot at the Art Carmichael Invitational last weekend, hosted by Rhode Island. BC topped Bryant (3-0) and URI (3-2) before falling to UAlbany (2-3). Following the weekends' competitions, juniors Clare Naughton and Amaka Chukwujekwu joined senior captain Cat Balido on the All-Tournament Team, while Naughton was named Most Valuable Player. Naughton tallied 39 kills and six blocks over the three-match tournament.
The Eagles meet the Tigers to open conference play after last meeting them in Jervey Gym to wrap up the 2018 season, a match which Clemson claimed in five sets. Prior to the season finale, the Eagles took down Clemson 3-0 in Chestnut Hill, pulling off their first sweep of an ACC opponent since topping Wake Forest on Nov. 19, 2017. Balido led the offensive effort with 11 kills while Jane DeJarld tallied 11 assists. Chukwujekwu (four blocks) and Makenzie Morrison (nine digs) headed the defensive effort in the win.
In 2019, the Tigers have been led by Kaylin Korte, who has 154.5 points through 130 kills. Emily Curtis (134 digs) and Annika Clark (33.0 blocks) lead the defensive effort, allowing just a .219 attack percentage from their opponents. Clemson currently holds the second-best spot in the conference for aces, putting up an average of 1.79 per set.
In the Eagles' next match, they found a similar outcome over the Yellow Jackets, taking down the conference foe in four sets in Chestnut Hill. Naughton put up a team-best 18 kills with 25 assists from DeJarld, while Morrison added 15 digs and Ally Mullen had a team-best five blocks. Jewel Strawberry put up seven kills from 10 attempts for a match-high .700 hitting percentage.
This season, Georgia Tech boasts the fourth-best hitting percentage in the league at .258 through their 11 matches. Julia Bergmann leads the offense with 175.5 points and 151 kills with Matti McKissock adding 439 assists. Defensively, Maddie Tippett (135 digs) and Kodie Comby (21.0 blocks) top the team standings.
Following the opening weekend, the Eagles return to Chestnut Hill for their first home matches of the season, hosting Duke (Fri., Oct. 4, 7:30 PM) and Wake Forest (Sun., Oct. 6, 1:00 PM).
