Eagles Top UMass In Season Opener, 2-1

Sam Smith scored her first career goal in the 88th minute, classmate Samantha Agresti potted the first goal of 2019.
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College women's soccer team used an 88th minute goal from Sam Smith to earn a 2-1 win over UMass on Thursday night in the season opener at the Newton Campus Fields. The win marked the first career victory for first-year head coach Jason Lowe.
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the game behind freshman Samantha Agresti's first career goal off of a corner kick. BC's edge would hold for 60 minutes, with UMass equalizing off of a corner kick in the 67th minute. Just when the teams seemed destined for extra time, Olivia Vaughn hit Smith with a pass that would lead to the 88th-minute game-winning goal.
Goalkeeper Allie Augur made her collegiate debut for the Eagles, making three saves to earn her first career win. Peyton Ryan took the loss for UMass.
Boston College returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 25 with a 5:30 p.m. home game against UMass Lowell.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 5' | Jillian Jennings sent a corner kick into the box as Samantha Agresti timed her run to the far post. The freshman ran onto the ball and repositioned herself to touch the ball inside the left post with her right foot.
- 67' | Ansley Frazier sent a corner ball in that landed at the midpoint of the box before skipping over to Melissa Kossler. Kossler settled it and then placed her left-footed shot high.
- 88' | Carrying the ball down the right side, Vaughn sent a ball ahead for Smith to run on to. Reaching it at the same time as the defender, Smith took one touch with her right foot to direct the ball into the box and then took a stride before firing a shot inside the far post.
- The win was the first career victory for head coach Jason Lowe.
- The Eagles are now unbeaten in the last 13 season-opening matches, going 11-0-2 since a 1-0 loss to Boston University on Aug. 25, 2006.
- Boston College earned its second consecutive win against UMass to move to 2-13-1 in the all-time series… it was the first meeting between the two teams since the 2002 season.
- This was the seventh time that BC and UMass met in the Eagles' season-opener.
- Five first-year players made their collegiate debuts: Allie Augur, Sam Smith, Samantha Agresti, Michela Agresti and Sydney Moore all started … sophomore transfer Alison Heckman made her first career appearance in a BC uniform.
- Augur earned her first career win while Samantha Agresti and Smith earned their first career points.
- UMass held the 4-2 edge in shots on goal and had a 7-3 lead in corner kicks.
