No. 41 Eagles Hold Off Pitt 5-2 on Urbinati’s Senior Day
April 07, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 41 Boston College celebrated Senior Day for captain Jackie Urbinati with a 5-2 ACC victory over Pitt in the final women's match at the Flynn Recreation Complex on Sunday. The Eagles (15-7, 5-7 ACC) picked up their 15th victory of the season to earn their highest win total in 15 years.
Urbinati and junior Kylie Wilcox pulled out the doubles point for BC in dramatic fashion, edging the Panthers' top tandem of Gabriela Rezende and Claudia Bartolome by a score of 7-2 in a tiebreaker. The 7-6 win followed a dominant 6-0 shutout at No. 3 doubles from Natasha Irani and Loren Haukova.
Competing without No. 1 singles player Yufei Long for the third time in four matches, the Eagles turned to Urbinati and Irani to extend their lead to 3-1 in singles as both posted straight set victories over Bartolome and Rezende in the No. 2 and 3 slots.
Wilcox had a chance to clinch the match during a back-and-forth affair in the No. 1 slot, but she was outlasted by Luisa Varon 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Instead it was Dasha Possokhova who provided the final point in No. 6 singles, sweeping Natsumi Okamoto 6-3, 6-3 as she competed in place of Long.
Laura Lopez scrambled from behind to make it a 5-2 final as the rookie downed Mariona Perez Noguer 7-6, 7-5 in two tight sets from the No. 5 slot.
Boston College closes the regular season next weekend with a pair of ACC road matches at No. 50 Notre Dame on Friday (April 12) and No. 4 Duke on Sunday (April 14).
