CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Rookie Laura Lopez, who clinched Boston College's upset of 10th-ranked Syracuse earlier this season, was the closer again on Friday afternoon as the 41st-ranked Eagles took down No. 27 Miami 4-3 at the Flynn Recreation Complex.
The Eagles tied their highest win total in the last 15 years as they improved to 14-7 overall, 4-7 in the ACC, and 12-3 at home. The Hurricanes fell to 13-6 (6-5 ACC), suffering their second straight loss in Chestnut Hill.
"We played our hearts out today, I'm so proud of how hard our team competed," said head coach Nigel Bentley. "Miami is such a great team and program and we have a lot of respect for them. We have been focused on this match for a long time. I'm really happy for our players, they have worked so hard and really earned this win."
BC won two of the three doubles matchups to seal the opening point of the match. Jackie Urbinati and Kylie Wilcox teamed up to beat the 17th-ranked duo of Daniella Roldan and Daevenia Achong 6-2 in No. 1 doubles, while Yufei Long and Natasha Irani earned a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 slot to clinch a 1-0 Eagles advantage.
Yuna Ito tied the match at 1-1 for the Hurricanes in No. 3 singles as she defeated Urbinati in straight sets. No. 70 Long came back to force a third set against the No. 2 player in the nation Estela Perez, but dropped the final set 6-2 as Miami pulled ahead 2-1.
Minutes apart, No. 91 Wilcox and Irani sealed victories in the No. 2 and 4 slots to put BC back in the lead.
Wilcox battled leg cramps throughout her matchup with Achong, who came back from 5-2 down in the third set to force a tiebreaker, which was gutted out by a hobbled Wilcox 7-4. Irani needed a tiebreaker to clinch her tight match against Marzal Martinez as the junior won in straight sets 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Despite winning the first set, Elene Tsokilauri dropped the second and third set to Ulyana Shirokova which made Lopez vs. Ana Madcur the deciding match.
The Spanish freshman coasted 6-1 in the first set but was tied 5-5 in the second set before breaking Madcur. With the score at 30-40, a Madcur shot sailed over the baseline as Lopez broke her serve to clinch the upset in straight sets.
With a chance to earn its highest win total since 2004, Boston College hosts Pitt for its final regular season home match on Sunday (April 7) at 11 a.m. The Eagles will also honor their lone senior on this year's roster Jackie Urbinati.
